Milla Mathias' New Book "Quem Disse que Você não Tem Nada pra Vestir?" (Who Says that you Have Nothing to Wear?")

It is in this hour, with little time and the clock ticking that they grumble and yell out the famous expression “I don’t have anything to wear". The closet is full of course, including full of possibilities.

To show that there is always something to wear and how to always use the right clothing for each occasion, taking age into account, physical type and using correctly what one has at hand, the image consultant Milla Mathias wrote the book “Who Says You Have Nothing to Wear?—How to Have a Closet that Enhances your Image” (Matrix Editora, 127 págs., R$ 27,00 and available only in Portuguese at the moment).

The author shows that the best piece for any determined situation, whether it is a normal day or workday, a business lunch, party, or romantic encounter, is within reach. “The truth is that the majority of people jam up their closets with pieces that are often not right for them, and for that reason, they think that they really have nothing to wear”, affirms Milla.

The book explains that people need to understand their biotype to buy the right pieces. The author says that it is possible to be impeccable without necessary using the most expensive brands.

Full of photos of people with diverse biotypes, with a lot of humor and levity, the book serves as a basic guide for day to day and how to use the right pieces to favor your body and hide weaker points that do not benefit your wardrobe, all with the support of the most competent image and style consultants in Brazil.

Run for Kids Who Can't, A-T Children's Project

Ataxia-telangiectasia, or "A-T," is a progressive, degenerative disease that affects a startling variety of body systems. Children with A-T appear normal at birth, and the first signs of the disease usually appear during the second year of life. These first signs are usually a "wobbly" lack of balance and slurred speech caused by "ataxia," which means a lack of muscle control.

A-T is presently incurable and unrelenting. If they are lucky enough not to develop cancer, most A-T children are dependent on wheelchairs by the age of ten, not because their muscles are too weak, but because they cannot control them. Later, A-T patients usually die from respiratory failure or cancer by their teens or early twenties. A few A-T patients live into their forties, but they are extremely rare.

The A-T Children's Project, located in Coconut Creek Florida, raises money to fund medical research that will hopefully find a cure or treatment for A-T.

Globond is very proud to have the Turkish American Chamber of Commerce and Industry of NYC, headed by President Sevil Ozisik and Executive Director Safak Dogan, as a Globond corporate member.

November 19: TACCI Executive Seminar

"Negotiating Business Contracts - The Future of the Organization" seminar was held by Turkish American Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TACCI), on November 19th at the Turkish Center, featuring Mr. Mark Meirowitz and Dr. Domenico Lepore, PHD. . The event kicked off at 6 pm with approximately 40 guests who had the chance to mingle and do networking enjoying the delicious treats, compliments of Ali Baba Turkish Cuisine, a member of TACCI.

After the networking session, both speakers of the night were introduced by the President of TACCI, Ms. Sevil Ozisik.

Globonder Dr. Lepore, who is also the author of "Deming and Goldratt: The Decalogue with Oded Cohen", started his speech about "Translating Knowledge Into Action: the constraint to growth". He talked about the three faculties of the intellect: intuition, development and execution. He also talked about his past experiences in business world, the importance of sustainability and interactivity in reaching the goals set by all kinds of business entities.

Who Cares?

Sao Paulo Globonder Mara Morao is an award-winning Brazilian filmmaker, whose previous film “DOUTORES DA ALEGRIA” was recognized in Brazil and abroad and considered by UNESCO as a movie which promotes a “Culture of Peace”.

Mara has just made her most recent film “Who Cares”, about social entrepreneurs in 20 ONG’s in 11 countries. One of these entrepreneurs is the beloved Wellington Nogueira the head of Doutores de Alegria who are clowns that visit Brazilian hospitals to cheer up sick children and adults. Others featured in the film are Ashoka founder Bill Drayton and Nobel Prize winner Muhamad Yunus. Mara is in the final stages of this film production and has already raised $1.25 million from sponsors such as Bradesco, Natura, Kraft and CSN in Brazil. These companies used funds from the Brazilian Lei Rounet and the Lei Incentivo Audio Visual, which give corporations tax write offs for sponsoring the arts. She is looking for an additional R$ 240,000. to complete the film and an additional US $300,000 for post-production and global distribution for educational purposes. IF you do have Lei Rounet or Lei Incentivo Audio Visual Funds available, or if you are an international company looking to do CSR and good PR at the same time, this is a great opportunity.

Hong Kong/Dubai/Melbourne Globonder Brett King & Globond Founder Kirstin Myers in Athens

The International Academy of Financial Management (IAFM) presented this Thursday (26th November) in cooperation with SBC TV (Satellite Business Channel), the very first ANNUAL LEADERS ROUNDTABLE in Athens.

Key speakers presented their positions for the upcoming conditions on global and local markets to an audience consisting of 80 of the top businessmen and executives of Greek industry.

IAFM has a long history of pioneering such events with respect to professional and social development, but this event brought to the Greek capital members and affiliates from across the globe to participate in this executive exchange. Panel members included Globonder Brett King from the Board of the IAFM, Remy Cohen of Cohen&Co, Kirstin Myers of Globond and Alkis Magdalinos advisor of the HEPO.

The conference focused on the development of the global economy emerging from the financial crisis, along with strategies and tools for adapting to the new market. Discussion on innovation, corporate diplomacy and change management were also presented and discussed with the bankers, industrialists and presidents of professional associations that were in attendance.

Brett said “The financial crisis is just the beginning for retail institutions. The toughest challenges are yet to come. Continued technology innovations, Web 2.0, social networking, app phones and mobility are stretching traditional banking models to the limit. Customer behavior is rapidly changing, why cheques are disappearing and your mobile phone will replace your wallet – all within the next 10 years."

He mentioned his upcoming book Bank 2.0 and his findings that "90-95% of bank transactions are executed electronically today. Internet, ATM, Call Centre and Smartphones have become mainstream for customers, while banks still classify these as ‘alternative channels’ and maintain an organization structure where Branch dominates thinking."

When Kirstin asked how many attendees were on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook, she was surprised to learn that only 2 of the Greek attendees were using any of those social media. She urged them to get connected with rest of the world on these platforms and spoke of a new world which has resulted from “Tectonic Shifts”. The world needs Tectonic Leadership she explained while pointing out that the word Tectonic means not only destruction but creation; the origin of word is the Greek “Tektonios” which means builder.

Kirstin also spoke about the huge opportunity for emerging players like Greece to take their proper place on the world stage and to help lead the new world via their excellent relationship skills, priority on the family and balance between their personal and professional life. She reminded them that Greece was the birthplace of democracy and that it was in Sparta where 300 brave men fought to their death to defend their principles and way of life.

The roundtable was moderated by Athanasios Papandropoulos, emeritus President of the European Journalists associations.

The Deputy Minister of Finance, Ph. Sachinidis was the sponsor of the event representing the City of Athens and the Greek government.

Globond Founder Kirstin Myers Speaks at Social Media Networking Conference

Now with greater access to social media networking, the fundamentals of human connections and relationships (the basic elements that are hard wired in all of us) have become a vital business strategy for companies to embrace to connect cultures with new business opportunities.

To understand the basic principles first hand, the International Executive Resources Group, Inc., featured four experts offering their insights into the opportunities with international social media networking, November 23, 2009, at the Emerging Enterprise Center at Foley Hoag in Waltham, MA. Among the experts was Kirstin Elaine Myers, founder of Globond International.

Kirstin provided insight into her journey along the way of building international business relationships. Globond, founded in 2002, provides a resource where she connects interested, ethical, talented and humble business people with a social media support system. Angela Montgomery’s Love-Story-in-Italy Novel

Globond-member Angela Montgomery’s first novel, Title to be announced in next issue, will be available soon. It is being published through a POD initiative for new writers funded by the Arts Council of England. Set in the scandal-ridden Milan of the early 1990s, it is a story about life choices and falling in love. She wrote it to speak out about the insidious daily compromises that society, in particular contemporary Italy, can create, and to celebrate our constant ability to choose a better way. She hopes readers will find the book entertaining, moving and inspiring. Globond will be assisting her to market the book.

Angela has lived in London, Salerno, Milan, New York and is now looking forward to relocating to Toronto. Her professional life started in theater, and spans education, writing and translation. She is writer, editor and researcher for the Sechel Intelligent Management project. This project was created by her husband Dr. Domenico Lepore, an organizational scientist. This systems-based management approach fosters higher intelligence by connecting three faculties of the intellect: intuition, understanding and knowledge and thus enables organizations to generate robust and powerful solutions and practice. Raising the Bar: Effective Communication Pointers

Every one of us can do a better job of communicating – face to face, by phone, and in writing – especially in the workplace, where professional and personal feeling tend to get mixed. To improve our communication performance to get the outcomes we desire starts with taking in the constructive feedback from one or more persons, who we trust and who respects us.

You may want to regard this constructive feedback as less about asking you to stop or change what you have been doing, and much more about inviting you to broaden and deepen your communication repertoire – for greater flexibility, adaptability and creativity. In this way, you can be even more successful in the future – in a wider range of business and social situations, and with a larger variety of important people.

Below are several ways to communicate more successfully. Only you can identify the ones that you need to work on.

Slow down and vary the speed of your speaking. And shorten your longish flow of words before making a genuine pause.

It tires people to hear a speaker go on and on, and at top, almost super-human, speed -- which does not feel natural in conversation (although it might has showmanship value). The result may be that they are hearing you, but actually not listening to all you are saying. This listening editing may mean that they do not get the key points you really want to convey.

Listeners need more time -- just a few second of quiet -- to take in, digest and consider your new, creative and sophisticated statements. This we cannot do easily or well when you jump from idea to idea. We do not always believe that you are thinking things through. It may come across as more force of performance than power of thought; and not always realizing the nuances and consequences of your ideas.

Pauses would be welcomed as they would better enable us to take in every one of your substantial ideas and respond to or ask a question of you. And they would better allow you to consider your previous statement (do you want to modify it?), and to reflect momentarily on your next statement (considering its implications, exceptions, consequences and/or risks).

Machines, such as robots, now or someday, will speak long and quickly. But that is not the affect (the root of affection) that people feel comfortable with and trust. The human touch – smiling, empathy and connection – is what really counts, rather than the quantity and rapidity of information.

Inevitably in a long/fast performance, there is the increased presence of gratuitous information. Aldo, a running-on speaking approach increases the repetition of points, which are not necessary and can become annoying.

Put another way, in conversations too much quantity (your tendency) can overwhelm and obscure genuine quality.

While not your conscious and explicit intent, the tour-de-force, long-and-fast statement style at can comes across as pushy (rather than engaging and inviting), selling (rather than explaining), and desperate (rather than poised, confident and sincere).

The long/fast speaking delivery approach may result in an immediate and apparently positive outcome, but may just as well be a reflection of a forced agreement – which later is regretted, resisted and rescinded.

In a long presentation done at a fast speed, it is more difficult for the listener to discern which are your major and which are your minor points. An effective way to make the major points stand out is to speak them at a slower speed – and with a heightened smile and leaning forward.

When the goal of your presentation/persuasion is for people not just to hear your points, but to understand, remember and act upon them, then pausing after each point, with the major ones having been spoken at a slower speed, would be a desirable speaking strategy.

It is believed that most top-of-the-food-chain persons (VIPs) appreciate class, finesse, quality, conciseness and precision. Following the recommendations outlined above can better convey this impression.

Also last month, Scott Hamlin was happy to report that the Black Crows lead guitarist Luther Dickinson was seen wearing on stage one of the company’s new casual jackets.

The Black Crowes is a rock and roll band from the U.S. that has sold over 20 million albums since it began in 1984. According to Wikipedia, "In 1990, the readers of Rolling Stone magazine voted the band “Best New American Band.” The Crowes is listed at #92 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock."

Luther Dickinson has been a member of The Black Crows since late 2007. He comes from Memphis, born in 1973, and grew up in a musical family. He is also the lead vocalist and guitarist for the North Mississippi All-Stars, which has been nominated for three Grammies in the Best Contemporary Blues category. He was featured in Rolling Stone as one of the new gods of the guitar. He follows in the footsteps of guitar legends, such as Jimmy Hendrix and Duane Allman, with a true blues-rock southern style.

Raising the Bar: On Becoming a Vegetarian

For years I was aware that important people to me were becoming vegetarians. Some gave the explanation of better health (or less weight and disease), better for animals (who will now be more at ease with you), or better for the Earth’s sustainability. I also realized that the definition of a vegetarian was flexible, sometimes strict in banning non-flesh foods or even eggs and dairy, and other times more inclusive.

As I have aged (I am now 66), I have recognized that the path to optimal health and longevity involves diet, exercise, stress management, relationships, environment and life purpose/fulfillment – or what I call the “Agenda of Six.” Over the decades, I have observed that many people I know are not aging well and even “crashing and burning” – getting diseases as immune systems weaken, losing mental clarity and memory, declining in energy and joy in living, and drifting without life purpose and vision. I have been doing my best to enhance my Agenda of Six to live well and long (with my goal being a modest 100).

Slowly my diet has improved over the years. But I came to realize, from friends and websites, that I was risking my health with some risky eating habits. Among them were comfort foods (wheat bread and pastas), white sugar (in pastry), prepared foods (full of unpronounceable ingredients), and chicken and fish (raised under questionable circumstances; I had given up red meat long ago).

I was also told of the vitality gained from raw foods and how they deprived prospective cancer cells of fuel (too many people I know have suffered from cancer). As my mother was such a bland and cautious cook, when getting my first apartment at 23, I have been dedicated to being a gourmet cook, which meant I prepared foods from exotic ingredients and in diverse combinations – too often of dubious health value. I also became conscious that I compensated for unconscious-based emotional swings by eating too much of this or too rich of that – with bloated, tired and gaseous results.

When I learned that America’s average health span ends seven years before the average life span, I declared that I wanted to be healthy – in body, mind and spirit – until the day that I passed on. I decided to take the Big Step – and undoing an eating style of decades is a Very Big Step – and become a vegetarian! But my own version of one.

I believe in the benefit of ritual, and saw the value of clearing out the old (past) before transitioning to the new (future). The result was my seven-day cleanse – including digestive herbs in pill and powder form, fruit and vegetable smoothies, and a series of colonics (using water to flush the “gunk” out of the intestines and adjacent organs). While not an easy regimen to follow, this preparation nicely readied me for a new way of eating.

I am now happily my own model of a vegetarian. I said good-bye to fish and chicken. I prepare more raw foods, especially salads (created from 20 or so ingredients in my refrigerator). I buy virtually all-organic ingredients. I avoid wheat and dairy products. I reject food in cans. I make soups from fresh and organic ingredients. And I cook up healthy grains, some from Peru and Ethiopia, which until recently I had never heard of, adding various spices, soy sauce, nuts (soaked overnight to aid their digestibility), and vegetables (especially onions and garlic).

I was aware of the wise saying, “Sometimes you have to feed the wolf to save the sheep.” To me this means having occasional eggs, which I adore; and enjoying raw chocolate, which I now make myself and amaze others with its deep, natural and alive taste – it is simpler to whip up than I ever imagined and fits into my passion for creativity. And I reserve the right on special occasions to consume – in very small quantities to avoid shocking my body – that are no longer on my acceptable list, such as pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream.

If you are considering becoming a vegetarian, let me share this advice with you: Do a seven-day digestive system cleanse to make the transition from old to new eating habits. Find an expert in the vegetarian, raw and healthy cooking realm to teach you how to genuinely enjoy, not just cope with, this new world of eating. Come up with your own definition of being a vegetarian – what you give up, what you follow, and what treats you will allow yourself (in moderation). Remove the forbidden foods from your larder (donating them to food banks), and stock up on fascinatingly healthy foods, such as Himalayan salt and coconut oil.

Select restaurants that have several vegetarian options on the menu, particularly exciting salads. When invited to meals in people’s homes, gently explain to them in advance what you now can and cannot eat; be somewhat flexible to consume in polite moderation foods placed in front of you that are now off your list. When people ask you why you are a vegetarian, respond with diplomatic precision and brevity, and without boosting and judging their old-paradigm foods.

So go ahead, consider becoming a vegetarian – to boost your health, control your weight, love farm/ranch animals, or save the planet. Plus, learn to creatively prepare foods from the Earth’s garden that contribute to your joy of life!

Tectonic Leaders are those who address today’s global humanity-and-Earth-threatening problems, by developing innovative, bold ways to understand them, enroll others, and solve them. The poster-person of a Tectonic Leader is President Barack Obama.

Here is the bind that leaders of nations and organizations find themselves, and what they need to move forward:

Leaders’ problems appear to be unsolvable – large, complex, changing and difficult. They need to find new ideas out there to see and solve these most-challenging problems.
Leaders’ opponents keep a distance, and become more polarized and shrill. They would benefit from meeting with their opponents to find common ground and turn adversaries into allies.

Many of leaders’ followers flip flop easily and quickly – from lionizing to demonizing them, or simply giving mixed signals. Followers should receive continual communication, care and connection to keep them on board.

It is lonely at the top. Privileges and handlers surround leaders, giving them little access to new ideas. They would gain from an open forum of diverse people, listening more than speaking, and exposed to innovative ideas.

The purpose of the Tectonic Leadership Summit is to provide a stimulating place for established and emerging leaders to hear new solutions to big problems, speak directly with opponents who want genuine dialogue, and get support from other leaders. Rather than deliver another speech to polite applause, the Summit is where Tectonic Leaders can feel at ease, take in new thoughts, update their strategies, and strengthen their leadership competence.

Background on Tectonic Leadership

Today, the success and even survival of humankind is in jeopardy. Our specie’s impressive progress from hunting to deeper meaning has culminated in global warming, dwindling resources, polarized differences (ethnic, religious, cultural and political), continual wars, and weakening of economic systems and social relationships. Our vaulted progress may well be causing our imminent demise.

So can anything be done? Looking the big issues facing humanity today – all global in scale – it would be easy to feel cynical and hopelessness. But many leaders around the world are instead searching for ways to bridge seemingly impassible ruptures between peoples of differing ideologies, close the growing gap between developed and developing nations, and create sustainable solutions regarding shared natural resources.

Globonders, who themselves are leaders with these issues, requested a forum where those at the forefront of change can be fed with innovative ideas, and tangibly supported in taking action. After discussions about the paradoxes that exist in global challenge, the notion of a leadership summit took shape.

Tectonic Leadership is a metaphor for what is starting to happen in our world, and needs to happen even more.

Tectonic Leaders can be informed by this metaphor: Recognizing how the Earth's tectonic plates interact at their boundaries, understanding the parameters of those boundaries, and appreciate the mighty results. Earthquakes occur as rock elasticity is exceeded, and volcanic eruptions spring from deep tension. These concepts help us comprehend future outcomes. Similarly, human systems can create fault lines and cracks of fear and conflict between groups; until we go beyond our differences, and instead create common intent and commitment to resolve our global challenges.

Attributes of Tectonic Leaders

These are the nine qualities that Tectonic Leaders need to possess:

They comprehend the astoundingly changing conditions of the Earth and humanity, with profound catastrophes on the horizon, and the urgent need for transformation strategies and actions.

They take 100% responsibility for everything in their lives as having been created by them. They make no excuses, and focus only on results.

They are willing to step in the cracks – by taking a 360-degree view of the situation, making themselves vulnerable, and doing things innovatively and boldly.

They are always personally transforming – always learning, changing and growing. They are open to new possibilities. They constantly monitor their egos, and be guided by the greater good and their higher selves.

They know that they must enroll others. They consider all perceptions as valid, honor every view, and seek to negotiate a win-win situation for all parties. They roll up their sleeves and listen with their hearts and heads.

They see the paradox in everything. They use paradoxical thinking to remove the notion of right answers vs. wrong answers. This helps them reverse the distrust, and discover the solutions beyond the paradoxes.

They understand that intention creates manifestation. They focus the group on what needs to be created. If they set an intention that is aligned with their belief systems, they know that they can manifest it.

They go beyond advocacy and favor acceptance, self-responsibility and negotiation. This involves being open to new ways of resolving conflicts. The solution must involve letting go of control to bring about change.

They take bold action. They operate in the real world and the here and now, and devise strategies and implement them systematically and powerfully.

About the First Tectonic Leadership Summit, June 2009

The First Annual Tectonic Leadership Summit, held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Washington DC area, June 25-27, 2009, was a groundbreaking event that brought together 30 prominent speakers and enthused participants, including mainly prominent Globonders (members of Globond International, Inc.) and Friends of Globond (mainly the networks of Globonders). Results of the First Summit

At the Tectonic Leadership Summit in Washington, DC, the participants aligned their intentions, understood who the tectonic leaders were and who they were not, and raised the standard for Globond International to become a powerful global membership community. Speakers from the world over shared their wisdom – in the areas of economic restructuring, personal/professional integrity, health for peak performance, connecting for world change, organizational transformation, media and communications, governmental change, venture capitalism, among others.

The Summit’s participants, Globonders and Friends of Globond, set a new standard as Tectonic Leaders, who are now more able to create opportunities for new projects for world change. Thanks to this Summit, Globond International as a business and social community is becoming a powerful force for the betterment of humanity.

Previewing the Worldwide Tectonic Leadership Summit, April 2010

As a result of the first summit, Globond plans to host the Worldwide Tectonic Leadership Summit, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Washington DC area, in April 2010.

Added to the goals of the June 2009 Summit are these goals for the April 2010 Summit:

Gather 300 participants who want to learn and practice tectonic leadership.

Have a larger group of world leaders, from many sectors and nations, who are committed to positive change through new leadership approaches.

Set up private conversations between Tectonic Leaderships and their opponents after the Summit, when sets of opponents or potential allies have gone through the Tectonic Leadership process.

Encourage Tectonic Leaders to work together on solid and world-changing projects that contribute to solutions.

Globond’s Summit will become a vehicle for facilitating face-to-face meetings to create synergy between parties in mutual need or disagreement. A businessperson would participate to form business alliances for marketing innovations. A politician would attend to learn how to disagree with his opponents in a way that allows them to find common ground and both make progress. Globond will work on behalf of participants to arrange and facilitate such meetings of genuine sharing, with win-win goals in mind.

What You May Not Know About Turkey

Turkey, my homeland, is the Land of Homer, King Midas, Herodotus and St Paul. The country is the successor state to the Ottoman Empire, a major historical power which lasted for more than six centuries on three continents, controlling most of Southeastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Turkey’s largest city Istanbul is the only city in the world located on two continents, Europe and Asia. It was the capital of three empires: Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire. Turkey introduced coffee to Europe. Yogurt is a Turkish word.
A Turk, Orhan Pamuk, won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature. Some say that the first man to fly was Turkish, Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi, whose flight of 1.5 km was recorded by eyewitnesses in 1683, more than 200 years before the Wright Brothers made their first flight.

Two of the seven wonders of ancient world stood in Turkey, and the oldest human settlement was formed in Turkey in 10,000 BC. The first Christian church was built in Turkey and the seven churches that St. Paul visited were in Turkey. The first coins were minted in Turkey.
The Turkish people have always been tolerant of other religions, including Judaism. In 1942, after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal, Sultan Beyazid II (1481-1512) issued a formal invitation to them and they started emigrating to the Empire in great numbers. The Sultan is said to have remarked about the Spanish Monarch’s anti-semitism, “Ye call Ferdinand a wise king, he who makes his land poor and ours rich!”

During the tragic days of World War II, Turkey managed to maintain its neutrality. As early as 1933, Ataturk invited numbers of prominent German Jewish professors to flee Nazi Germany and settle in Turkey. Before and during the war years, these scholars contributed a great deal to the development of the Turkish university system. During World War II, Turkey served as a safe passage for many Jews fleeing the horrors of Nazism. While the Jewish communities of Greece were almost completely wiped out by Hitler, the Turkish Jews remained secure.
Several Turkish diplomats, Ambassadors Behic Erkin and Numan Menemencioglu; Consul Generals Fikret Sefik Ozdoganci, Bedii Arbel, and Selahattin Ulkumen; Consuls Namik Kemal Yolga and Necdet Kent, just to name a few, spent all their efforts to save from the Holocaust the Turkish Jews in those countries, and succeeded. Salahattin Ulkumen, Consul General at Rhodes in 1943-44, was recognized by the Yad Vashem as a Righteous Gentile ("Hassid Umot ha'Olam") in June 1990.

Turkey continues to be a shelter, a haven for all those who have to flee dogmatism, intolerance and persecution. In June 1940, Behiç Erkin did, as had several other Turkish diplomats – such as Necdet Kent in Marseille and Selahattin Ülkümen in Rhodes – making remarkable efforts to save from the Holocaust the Turkish Jews within his mission's reach. In practical terms any Jewish person who could document a Turkish connection, even the slightest, was saved, similar to the better-known actions taken during the same period by Oskar Schindler. Also, Namık Kemal Yolga (1914–2001) was a Turkish diplomat and statesman, known as the Turkish Schindler.

Secondly, the designation of all managers as CEOs points to their commitment to taking the 100% responsibility that goes with the conventional CEO (Chief Executive Officer) position. Each player on the team is ready to do what she/he has to do to advance the organization and thus help our Members to improve and prosper.

Third, the multiple CEO arrangement dramatically marks Globond as a horizontally aligned organization, with a real management team approach. The conventional hierarchical/vertical structure – too often with one hard-pressed, overburdened and out-of-touch CEO at the top – is showing signs of faltering and even fading. More and more, the future of organizations belongs to flatter structures, thus closer to the customers/members and more agile for responding to changes in the world. Barbara Joyce Frank

Great Falls, VA Globonder Barbara Joyce Frank, Ph.D., has been a trailblazer and advocate of humanity’s profound connection to Nature and the Earth, for the past 40 years. Today she is Grandma Rocks.

Barbara considers herself lucky to have been raised near the Atlantic Ocean and at a very early age felt a mixture of joy and awe, and a deep sense of connection to the Natural World. Throughout her life, she has personally derived inspiration, guidance and comfort from Nature, and found ways to share it with others worldwide.

In her career, Barbara has encouraged people to embrace the great outdoors, and to bring Nature into their workplaces, schools and homes. She is dedicated to using her special knack to help people to see the Earth in new and exciting ways, with strong and multifaceted relevance for their everyday lives. Her mission is to weave Nature’s wisdom into everyone’s life.
Barbara was green decades before it was cool: In the late '60s and early '70s, her academic studies led to the first green Environmental Geology doctorate. In the '70s-‘80s, her pioneering work in experiential green learning helped thousands of students, teachers and military personnel to develop a green awareness. In the early 90s, she championed federal government efforts to promote green partnerships with academic institutions, industry, nonprofits and local governments. In the late 90s, she established a green meeting center in Great Falls, VA, for nonprofit, government and corporate teams to tap into the calming and creative benefits of training in a richly natural setting. Since ‘00, she has facilitated innovative green team-building exercises to foster green leadership, green workplace and green teams, in order to promote the sustainability of organizations.

At a time when men considered the study of the Great Outdoors their realm, Barbara took her first Geology course. She loved the study of the science and wonders of the Earth, and immediately switched majors to become the first female geology major at Binghamton University, completing her undergraduate degree in just three years. She discovered the Earth during this first Geology course – amazed at how streams carve their valleys, glaciers dumped Long Island, and gigantic tectonic plates moving Los Angeles north toward San Francisco. What began as a way to fulfill a science requirement became her life’s passion, especially when she took field trips to sites of incredible natural beauty, as part of the Geology curriculum.

The Geology Department at the University of Arizona encouraged Barbara in her studies and arranged for her to receive a National Defense Education Act Title IV Fellowship to complete a doctorate in only three years, bypassing the master’s degree. Also, she was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship to attend the Juneau Icefield Research Project in Alaska. In 1968, as the sole female participant with 39 male participants, she found the two-month field experience to be life changing. Her fellow graduate students insisted that the great outdoors belonged to men, and she had no right to be there. Their words’ effect was to make her even more determined to be a geologist. She considered it absurd to believe that only one gender should be allowed to study the Earth. On this field course, she found herself surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. She loved learning experientially on a glacier about its power to sculpture the landscape. Since then, she has inserted an active experiential component in all her academic and training courses.

When determining her doctoral dissertation research focus, Barbara forged into areas where no geologist has gone before. She conducted an interdisciplinary environmental project on the effects of urbanization on the stream flow of a river in South Carolina; this was when environmental geology was not yet a specialization in Geology. While researching the river system, she became more intimately connected to Nature. While the river struggled with the impact of the urbanization of its drainage basin, at the same time she found herself in a bad marriage with two small children. She turned to the river for help in deciding whether or not to divorce. From the river’s edge, she saw how it handled the construction material: The river moved the added load as best it could, picked it up when it had the energy, and let it sit until a stronger flow moved the material. She felt that she could do the same, and decided to raise her children on her own, carrying her load the best she could.

After completion of her doctorate at the age of 26 in 1973, Barbara received a National Science Foundation Post-doctoral Fellowship to study glacial melt-water streams in Norway.
University of Maryland University College hired Barbara as a faculty member to develop a Geology program for its Munich, Germany Campus. Her 15 years of teaching was marked by the unprecedented attendance of 25% of the student body in her classes and on her study tours (field trips). She led experiential learning courses throughout the year to Italy to explore active volcanoes, Yugoslavia for its extensive cave system, and Austria and Switzerland for glaciers. These courses attracted undergraduate and graduate students, and U.S. Department of Defense Dependent School teachers. Her undergraduate students gave her the nickname of Doc Rock, which accurately reflected her intimate knowledge of earth systems, deep love of the Earth as a living organism, and appreciation of the need for humankind to stay closely connected to Nature.
Since returning to the United States on a American Academy for the Advancement of Science Congressional Fellowship in 1989, Barbara has worked on the international science and technology initiatives of the U. S. House of Representatives Science and Space and Technology Committee, environmental education initiatives at the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, and nuclear waste clean-up for the U. S. Department of Energy.

In the course of her work as a senior manager for the Federal Government, she earned a Masters of Science at American University in Organizational Development to best facilitate the major change management initiatives required so that more people could deal more harmoniously, responsibly and creatively with the pressing issues affecting the Earth as the only home of humanity.

Convinced that better decision making with regard to the Environment will only come from an awareness and appreciation of the fact that we are part of Nature, Barbara has undertaken the responsibility of teaching people to experience the joy of natural connection through teaching, writing books, giving speeches, leading tours, and developing a line of natural products for homes, schools and offices.

When training teams, Barbara provides natural supportive environments and engages team members in low-impact and creative natural experiential learning activities. She gets great satisfaction from helping teams to work more effectively by understanding the natural personality preferences within their group and learning to honor the differences between individuals. She takes pride in helping organizations to deal more effectively with chaos, change and creativity with her approach based on organizational principles active in the Natural World.
Barbara helps individuals, groups and organizations to deal innovatively with change in their professional and personal lives. She draws on her uniquely sensitive understanding of the way the Earth has responded to change throughout its 4.6 billion years of history. Her current concern is for the rapid disintegration of family bonds and the estrangement of many children from their parents and grandparents, which results in alienation, which in turn undermines the quality of our society and planet.

Barbara has recently changed her nickname to Grandma Rocks to better articulate her current mission to teach grandparents around the world to connect with their grandchildren through the sharing of Nature. Being a grandmother of five grandkids, she is discovering the joy of introducing them to the Earth’s fascinating and intimate story. In the process, she is developing her knowledge base and teaching approaches to be used in a variety of old and new media to inform and inspire grandparents worldwide to show and explain Nature to their grandkids, who are the future stewards of our precious planet.

With plans and passion to connect grandparents and grandkids with each other and to Nature and Earth, Barbara is contributing to solving these problems: (1) Loneliness and isolation among baby boomers and empty nesters, (2) shortage and lack of emphasis in our hurried society of role models and mentors for children, and (3) the increased distance between modern humankind and Nature, because the spread of new technologies is eroding social behavior. She contends that we need to incorporate the Nature Factor in all that we do in order to lead genuinely balanced and healthy personal and professional lives.

Barbara points to an opportunity for grandparents to help their grandkids’ overall health. She observes how young people are getting more and more caught up in using the new electronic technologies. She believes that life is too precious to waste huge amounts of one’s time on Planet Earth staying indoors or getting lost in cyberspace and thus separated from Nature. It is now known that many people are suffering from Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD), with diminished use of senses, and attention difficulties, and elevated rates of physical and emotional illnesses. In leading her Connecting with Nature workshop, she sees NDD’s symptoms replaced with curiosity, creativity and overall wellness.

Brooks Greene-Barton, Los Angeles

"I love to be at home in the forests and the mountains though recently I realized that I had to be further inside the jungles of cities to help Earth open to being natural."

Brooks grew up in Los Angeles where his father was a professor of surgery at UCLA with a private practice in Beverly Hills, California. At the age of 17, he was introduced to a life changing opportunity as a Congressional Intern for the number two leader of the Ways and Means Committee for the House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. and also became a close friend of the Turkish Ambassador's family.

"I attended events at the Turkish Embassy, where the wife of the Czechoslovakian Ambassador to the US, who was well known for her daily regime of eating one orange a day as her only meal for thirty-eight years, would walk into formal gatherings with a radiant energy that had the effect of opening everyone to physically feel why they were on Earth at that time. All of the invited world leaders who met this unusual woman would talk about how important that experience was for them, again, again and again. That was a beautiful gift of life opportunity for me. Also, I was introduced to several uniquely integrated world leaders of that time period. One was when I was in New York City. I connected to a real estate broker who sold large properties for corporations, non-profits and governments and he never allowed money to be paid to him. He lived in a multi million dollar apartment, always had limousines and private jets organized for him, none of which he owned, and had whatever supported him paid for directly by foundations, board of directors and private banks, at their insistence."

When Brooks was in the US Military Intelligence, during the Vietnam War, he was Liaison Officer between the Turkish General Staff and the Pentagon (American Generals). He was appointed this position by interview with a US Army General at the age of 19. During this time, having previously been declared "legally blind" by the State of California, he took full responsibility for why his eyes could not see and now has not worn glasses for over forty years.
“ I had to learn to take responsibility for my reality even when I was only 1 year 4 months old. My mother had to pull me out of my crib when I was yelling at two evil eyes forcing energy out of my body one evening. Because she and my grandparents denied my reality experience, even though I offered five times what actually happened to me, I honored that I had to adopt them by my becoming their parent. I related with them only as I felt they would be able to receive. I became autonomous to honor relationship itself.”

After receiving an MBA (USC) and before the age of 30, Brooks married, was Managing Publisher of The Hollywood Reporter and then reorganized what today is Washington Mutual as a principal of the largest retirement investment program of any bank in the US. After that, he became First Vice President of Coldwell Banker Real Estate and completed transactions of some of the most expensive real estate in the world, as well as representing billionaire clients (Sir James Goldsmith, Johnny Carson, etc.) and governments (US, UK, CA, NY, etc.).

Since the age of 41, Brooks has been an international teacher helping to raise the opportunity of life for people in many ways. He began as a shaman leader, bought a public park and transformed it into a retreat sanctuary. He invited people to come into their authority as a spiritual presence in nature, through an orientation called "Wizardry". When 9/11 happened in New York, he reorganized his direction for leaders of the world to own their authority by his founding and creating "Art of God". Full alliance with his daughter Riven and his wife/ally Alison has opened and inspired Brooks to organize "Guide of Society", as an opportunity to advance strong leaders into their full capacity, as well as, to encourage human society into sovereignty with Mother Nature and God.

"The 21st century is the opportunity for relationship for everyone to change. Having been raised by daughters, I deeply appreciate the reflection that women can give to men. Ladies organize how Lords prioritize and Lords support the authority of Ladies. It is said in Africa that at least six lionesses are needed to raise a lion king, though what is not honored is that the lionesses are in general more advanced than the lion king simply to hold space for him."

Brooks is now reorienting his direction and focus with government leaders and industry innovators as a way to organize growth in society from the inside out. He supports a new world of Earth to become authentic in making leadership in the world available to everyone.

Scott Hamlin

Portland, Oregon Globonder Scott Hamlin was born and raised in that city where he has always been a big lover and enthusiastic participant in outdoor sports. He managed to find a way to make a living from his passion: 15 years ago, after retiring his spikes from track and field at Cal Poly Pomona, University of Oregon and the Nike Oregon International Track Club, he launched his business career at Adidas International.

Along the way, Scott married Lisa Creamer, and they had two sons, Flynn Hamlin, now seven, and Liam Hamlin, now five.

During his time at Adidas, Scott acquired skills in a wide range of areas, from product research and innovation to overall business management. In his 10 years with the company, he served in roles overseas as the Director of Sales and Marketing at Adidas Argentina and the President and Managing Director of Adidas Brazil. In both countries, he oversaw all operations and realized more than a 60% increase in revenue and a return to profitability.

He continued his career at Jockey International as the Global Director of Design, before moving to Royal Robbins as the Global Director of Product, responsible for the design, development, product marketing and sourcing of the 40-year-old outdoor apparel brand, which experienced significant growth during his time with the company.

Scott joined Globond in 2002, shortly after the sudden birth of his oldest son in a Brazilian beach house during a weekend get-away (learn more about this amazing story in a separate article in this Globonder Journal). While he was active with Globond in its early days, Globond was new and not yet large enough to help him. In the past seven years, Globond has expanded and reached critical mass, so he has eagerly returned to the fold. Currently, Scott is the Founding Partner of Looptworks, a company that creates meaningful products from upcycled materials. It is an innovative business that repurposes abandoned materials into meaningful, long-lasting and limited-edition products. The company is re-imagining product creation with the groundbreaking upcycling process, creating limited-edition clothing and accessories from excess materials. Its socially responsible designs are made from pre-consumer excess materials. By re-using the world's pre-consumer excess, the U.S.-based company aims to rid the world of waste, while inspiring a generation to reduce their impact on the planet.

Looptworks will target an active lifestyle that brings together elements of board sports (surf, skate and snowboard) and outdoor activities (hiking, climbing, mountain biking, etc.), while adding a sophisticated, urban flair for style. As an avid student of psychology, Deborah studied the entire mental health spectrum, which includes the special needs and circumstances of what people are born to and about which they can learn to adapt. While not believing in labeling people, she sees learning from their perspective. Her entire career has been devoted to helping people who have disabilities, physical and mental, to be contributors, especially through employment. She was affected by her father’s death of alcoholic malnutrition, brilliant and battered by self-destructive depression. By contrast, thanks to her efforts, her adopted daughter with dyslexic triumphed to graduate from college with a 3.2 average. Having lost a sister to leukemia and herself having recovered from cancer, she has developed an astounding sensitivity to people, dignity and health care that have propelled her professional path.

Deborah learned in her graduate clinical career that asking people in therapy to “say more about that” rarely resulted in improvement. In her view, people need structured guidance to find their way, as do organizations. She formulated this process: understand their perception of the problem, next set a goal, and then provide the means to create progress through clear objectives. Even successes in small increments, as defined by either a person or an organization, eventually build into increasing successes.

Deborah has been a consultant with a mirror, but without the smoke. She focuses on problems and uses a solution to success approach with clear plans for achievable increments. Her clients have included organizations in all areas, especially manufacturing, healthcare and government. Her short list includes Yankee Candle, Raytheon, Polaroid, State of Massachusetts, State of Pennsylvania, SEB (producers of AllClad Pans), Mon Valley Hospital, Greenville Hospital in North Carolina, Berkshire Medical Center, and Physician and Therapeutic Practices. She is an expert witness for litigation involving the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Deborah’s passion is to develop and disseminate best practices for efficient, effective, timely, safe work. It is not enough to be good enough. There is an ethic to having the means to being the best. In this context, she filed a lawsuit holding the State of Massachusetts accountable for the education of special needs children in licensed private schools. In winning the case, she set a legal precedent that private schools should be held accountable to individual educational plans as a contract of service.

Deborah developed and patented one of the first height-adjustable workstations for people with wheelchairs. She has invented more than 20 products for people with disabilities. For 20 years, she has engineered out the risks to safety for employees in many industries.

Deborah has written reference/solution texts on Ergonomics and the Americans with Disabilities Act. In her public speaking, she tells a good story and interacts with audiences to evoke the wow factor of learning through participation. She addresses a variety of topics, such as robots, healthcare quality, manufacturing process control, safety, ergonomics, and, of course, competency-based job descriptions.

Deborah is patriotic for peace, and committed to not just watching the world, but being a working part of changing the world. Her current initiative with the World Health Organization is to support the growth of competence in all cultures and deliver health care where needed and with nurturance.

Deborah has created opportunities for leaders to launch new businesses innovations, managers to maximize the value of existing businesses, and change-adept leaders to rescue businesses that have fallen into decline. Kenan Saatcioglu

Turkey Globonder Kenan Saatcioglu was born in Istanbul, the only city between two continents Europe-Asia and the capital of three Empires: Roman, Byzantine & Ottoman. Shortly after graduating from Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul with a degree in Civil Engineering, (1995), he began his career as a professional tour guide. This position allowed him to indulge his passion for world travel. Since he had graduated from an Italian high school, he led various groups between Turkey and Italy, providing information about life, culture, history and archaeological sites. At the same time, he was a simultaneous translator for businesspeople during their conventions and meetings.

After leaving the tourism industry, Kenan’s next ventured into the world of innovation and inventions, becoming the R&D Assistant Manager at Atasay Kuyumculuk San. ve Tic. A.S, in Istanbul. His role was to search for new technologies and improvements in various countries, and then propose the best ones to the management who then applied the project to production.
Atasay recognized Kenan’s contribution and he was continually promoted to various positions within that jewelry company. Reporting to the CEO, he set up the Los Angeles office, established new relationships with Atasay’s US customers in the wholesale and retail market, increased the customer base and added catalogue companies to the portfolio. As a result, sales increased by 450%.

Kenan spent seven years in operations and sales/marketing management positions with electronic retailers, department stores and mall stores, and importers and wholesalers. He worked with management to develop action plans and recommend new trendy product development. He organized new divisions and worked closely with various manufacturers overseas, with additional responsibility for the control and logistics to the customers. Always an innovator, hr developed an application for consumer-based quality assurance and application. Kenan has been given an award from Sears known as Partners in Progress.

He is currently the Executive Director of the Turkish-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the leading Turkish-American independent business support and networking organization in the U.S. TACCI functions to help its members improve their success, gain business expertise, and introduce them to potential customers and suppliers.

The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) and Under Secretariat of the Turkish Prime Ministry for Foreign Trade (DTM) are both represented on TACCI's Board of Directors and are the strongest supporters of the organization. TACCI has over 100 established companies in its membership body. Kenan has always dreamed of globetrotting and exploring history. He likes to approach people strategically; chess has been his passion for more than 10 years. He loves innovation and creativity, especially when they help people to reach their business goals. Globonder Brett King and his wife Rebekah have just welcome the arrival of their third child, Thomas Patrick King, born the 8th of July, 2009 in Australia, his parents’ native country, though they have been living in Dubai for 3 years and were living in China for some years before that. After spending time as a family with their newborn and children Hannah (9) and Mark (6) the Kings will move to Hong Kong from where Brett will manage The International Academy of Financial Management Training as its CEO. Globond extends its heartfelt congratulations to the King family and wishes it a wonderful respite back in Ozzie!

Just a day at the beach . . .

On Thursday afternoon Oct. 11th, 2002, we got the dreaded word for Lisa´s OBGYN (Dr. Carlos) that entering her 8th month of pregnancy she was 2 centimeters dialated, a natural occurence he assured us, but that she would have to STOP EXERCISING! I said to myself, now here is a Doctor who does not know his patient. Asking Lisa to stop exercising is like asking the Amazon river to suddenly stop the water from flowing. However, firm in my belief that I was not ready to have this kid popping out any time soon, I asked him to reenforce this need to stop being active with her, to the point of beating her senseless with it if need be.

The good Doctor obliged and Lisa left the Dr.´s office distressed about what she was going to do for the next 4 weeks with out any type of physical activity. Before leaving, the Doctor suggested that we schedule the birthing classes and the how-to class for caring for a newborn baby with his nurse/midwife, get all of the emergency numbers for his staff, and schedule a visit to the hospital. In the back and forth attempt to schedule the classes, we finally settled on Tuesday, Oct. 16th and Thursday Oct. 18th and then left the office to go to lunch.

Being that Friday was a holiday in Brasil, we had planned months in advance to rent a house at the beach with our friends Mark and Katie. However, on a three day weekend, everyone from São Paulo (a city of 20 million people) leaves town at the same time, and many go to the beach. To avoid spending 6-9 hours in a traffic nightmare, it is best to make the 2 and a half hour trip very late at night. Our excuse to do this came in the form of Eric Clapton, who was in town on Thursday night to give a concert. This was a concert that Lisa had very much wanted to attend. So, the plan was hatched, that Lisa, Katie, and I would go to the concert (Mark having enough good taste not to want to attend) and then we would meet Mark outside of the concert at 11:30pm with all of the dogs (our one and Katie and Mark´s three) and we would caravan down to the beach.

The concert turned out to be, just what the Doctor ordered, literally, a real snore. Lisa and Katie sat together in the row in front of me, as I was unable to get 3 seats together in the same row. In typical Lisa and Katie style, they chatted through the entire concert. I on the other hand, sat directly behind them, sandwiched between a 65 year old man and an 18 year kid. The 65 year old was with his wife and they felt the urge to practice there best Saturday Night Fever moves to the Clapton oldies inadvertently jabbing me in the ribs every time his John Travolta meets Lawerence Welk dance move required a pointed finger, arm extension for emphasis.

The 18 year old kid was with a group of 4 other friends who had all spent entirely too much time in one of their bedrooms, getting high under black lights while looking at old album covers and practicing Clapton air guitar moves while screeching the worst impression of english lyrics know to man. With their recently purchased Eric Clapton headbands in place, it was clear that they were waiting for Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison Janis Joplin and Bob Marley to all come out on stage with the deceased members of Lynrd Skynrd and let Clapton lead a guitar filled, earth – shaking medly of “I Shot the Sheriff” and “Free Bird”. “Eric Clapton rocks!!!!!!!!” They screamed at the end of “Layla”.

Lisa and Katie continued chatting, with Lisa sliding in the comment, “Oh, I like this song.” as everyone around them was on their feet doing a standing ovation, with lighter in hand, and the flame extended toward the evening sky. At 11:30pm we left the stadium, just before the first encore, in order to meet Mark and head to the beach.

We still hit traffic on the way to the beach, but the trip only took the standard two and a half hours. After unpacking and settling in, we crashed into bed about 3:00am.

The next day, Friday, October 12th, was spent surfing (me), reading, napping, walking on the beach and generally taking it easy. After the Doctor´s visit, I had made it a point to get caught up in the pregnancy book I was reading as I had left off in month 7 and what the Doctor had said scared me enough to try and get caught up to month nine.

In the evening, we sat down to play cards. Lisa was winning when we took a bathroom/drink-mixing break. When Lisa called me into the bathroom, I commented to Mark, “This couldn´t be good”, and indeed it wasn´t. Lisa had a larger than normal vaginal discharge (sorry for those weak of stomach).

It was at this moment that we realized that we had forgetten to get the emergency telephone numbers for the Doctor´s staff. Because our cellular phones do not get service at the beach house, I loaded Katie and Lisa into the car and we drove towards town to get phone service and to call Katie´s sister Abby, in the US, who is a doula. We were able to get ahold of her and explained the situation. Abby informed us that it sounded like Lisa´s mucus cap had broken, which is ok and that as long as her water didn´t break, she would be ok. She said that Lisa needed to stay in bed and rest.

After getting back to the house and getting Lisa settled in on the couch, she remebered that her friend Leen had her baby with Dr. Carlos´s partner and that she might have the emergency numbers. So Mark and I trekked up to the highest point next to the house and managed to get cell phone service. I got a hold of Leen and her husband Sascha gave me all of the emergency numbers.

I called and spoke to nurse Rosalee who said the same thing that Abby had told us. As long as the water didn´t break everything was ok and that Lisa would have to stay in bed and rest. She added that if the water did break, that we would need to go back to São Paulo and have her looked at by a Doctor because she was one month early and the baby could be at risk.
Mark and I returned to the house and had something to eat and the four of us watched a very funny Ben Stiller movie on Mark´s DVD player/laptop. Unfortunately, the events of the evening had distracted us all too much to concentrate on the movie and Lisa and I went to bed worried.
At 4:30am Lisa woke me up saying that she could not sleep and that she was uncomfortable. I gave her a back and shoulder massage, and she managed to go back to sleep for a little while. At 6:00 am she got up to go to the bathroom. From the bathroom I she yelled to me:

“Scott, my water just broke!”

With those five words, the chase was on. I had read in my pregnancy book that the worst thing that “expecting fathers” can do is panic after hearing these words. I had also read that after the water breaks, labor can last anywhere from 4 hours to 5 days. I was hell bent on maintaining my calm knowing that we were 2 and a half hours from the hospital and there was no immediate help available.

So, I got up and started packing the car. At 6:15am, Lisa, still on the toilet, had her first contraction (she called it a cramp). I woke up Katie and Mark to tell them we were headed back to SP. Lisa wanted Katie to come with us in case something happened on the way and I couldn´t help her and drive at the same time. At 6:20 am Lisa, Katie, Canela (our dog) and I left the beach house. Mark was going to stay to pack up and close up the house.

The roads on the North Coast of the State of São Paulo are characterized by lots of curves, speed bumps and potholes. However, they are heavenly in comparison to the dirt roads that run into and through the small towns that dot the coastline. Some of these roads take 20 minutes or more to navigate to a specific point in the town.

Bearing this in mind, I had to go at a snail´s pace, as Lisa was not taking the bouncing and jostling well. At the same time her contractions were coming more frequently, about every 3 minutes, and she made me stop every time she had one. In the back of my mind I was trying to do the math of how long it would take us to get back to SP,having to stop every 3 minutes.
The distance between Point A and Point B is 180 kilometers. Car One is traveling at 100 kilometers an hour, but has to reduce that speed down to 0 every three minutes, how long will it take car one to arrive at the hospital?

Multiple choice: A) Before the baby arrives B) After the baby arrivesC) Impossible to tell without knowing the duration of the contractions and the number of centimeters dialated, but it doesn´t look good.

At about 6:35am, we called Nurse Rosalee and told her what was happening. She informed us that we would not likely have time to return to SP and that we would have to do something else. At that point, she remembered that Dr. Carlos was in Juquei, the beach town only 20 minutes from where we were. She said she would call him and see if he was indeed there and then call us back.

During Lisa´s pregnancy, we had both read that women who had music playing during the birth had more relaxing births and that the babies seemed to adapt to the real world better, than those who did not have music. Subsequently, I pulled out the Crash Test Dummies CD “And God Shuffled His Feet” and put it on. It was the mellowest CD I had in the car and thought it might calm Lisa a little.

I was shot down during the next contraction as she screamed, “Please turn that music DOWN!”.
At about 6:45am, Rosalee called us back and informed us that Dr. Carlos was indeed at his beach house in Juquei a mere 15 minutes away and off we went.

If the road out of Camburi was long and bumpy, the road into Juquei made it look like the Autobahn, and Dr. Carlos´house was at the VERY END of the road. At this point and time, two things happened that made me realize we were in it deep. The first was that I missed my turn for the main road to down the beach, which forced us to take an even bumpier road. Lisa screamed at me, “Get on the main road to the beach, it´s OVER THERE, TURN LEFT!!!!!!!” The second was when I hit a really big pothole and Lisa screamed, “This baby is coming, I WANT TO PUSH!!!

“Whatever you do, don´t push, keep that thing inside of you,” I retorted. Pretty good I thought, remembering that this was the patented response of any Doctor on TV when a women said this during the TV birthing process. “I´m not a real Doctor, but I play one on TV” I thought to myself.

Shortly after that Lisa, with the sheets from the bed around her, informed us that she had to pee. Katie told her, “ it´s ok girl, you just go ahead and pee right there, you have the sheet around you, go ahead.” “Its ok, go ahead,” I found myself chiming in thinking in the back of my head, at least they’re leather seats and should clean up ok.

At 7:00am we finally arrived at the good Doctor´s house, he was waiting in the street in front of the house. He was wearing a yellow polo shirt, blue jeans and New Balance Running shoes (oh well, you can´t get them all). He started waving his hands like a traffic cop for us to pull in the driveway and follow him up to the house. He took off running in front of us.

When we arrived at the front door, Dr. Carlos opened the door and in between Lisa´s screams managed to tell her that he need to take a look. He then took her into the house and sat her on the sofa.

I parked the car, cracked the windows for Canela and went into the house where, sitting on the couch Dr. Carlos said to Lisa and I in a very calm voice, “Ok, there is no time to get to a hospital, we are going to do this right here, right now.”

At that point and time he turned to his maid and said, “Start boiling water and get some towels” He said to his wife, “get the kids up and out of the house.” He said to Katie, “call and see if there is a helicopter available to take Lisa and the baby back to São Paulo and call the closest first aid station and see if they have an ambulance with sterile supplies.” Then he looked at me and said, “go upstairs and wash your hands.”

Now we all know that Lisa has a loud voice and an even louder laugh, but I have never heard her, or any human being for that matter, scream as loud as she did during the next half hour or so. Due to her screaming, and the fact that it was 7:00am on a Saturday morning of a holiday weekend, the entire condominium was soon awake trying to find out what was happening. Before we knew it, blankets, towels, a heater, a bathing tub and baby clothes were arriving at the door as all who lived within shouting distance wanted to help.

After a few more blood curtling screams, a couple of “Oh God, please no, this really hurts” and one “I´m really sorry about your couch”, Flynn was born at 7:50am. Dr. Carlos checked him out quickly and told Katie that she could cancel the helicopter because the baby was fine. About 10 minutes later the VW Bus “ambulance” arrived with sterile blankets and a sterile medical kit. Dr. Carlos clamped the umbilical cord and I cut it.

At this point the Doctor explained that we all needed to relax and stay calm and keep the baby warm. Despite his explication, his wife offered us champagne and whiskey, which we turned down as we were still in shock over the events of the morning, which was just now reaching 8:00am. Shortly there after, their sons were brought back into the house and the 10 year old, Johnathan, looked at the baby and promptly left the house again. A few minutes later he came back in with a bouquet of handpicked flowers for Lisa.

After a while, Katie and I left to take Canela back to the beach house and to get Mark. Katie and I could not stop talking about what had happen and then Mark called. He had finally received Katie´s messages giving him updates of what had happened. Katie then told him the whole story and as she was telling him, we both began to cry.

Upon leaving Canela at the beach house with the other dogs and getting Mark, we returned to the scene of the crime. By this time, the entire condominium was up and active. As we walked up the driveway about 30 people gathered around us and started cheering and clapping and yelling congratulations. It was an unbelievable scene.

We entered into the house to Mozart music playing, Lisa holding Flynn on the couch and the good Doctor reading a book on the Dali Lama while drinking coffee. The entire scene was very surreal. After calming down, Dr. Carlos went for a walk on the beach. Upon his return, he suggested that I do the same, and I did.

I remember thinking, how can all of these people just go on with their day? Don´t they know what just happened? Don´t they know the amazing miracle that had just happened a few blocks from where they were laying in the sun? Then it dawned on me, I was them just a few hours ago. It seems that the events of others rarely touch our lives. Something has to happen to us, or close to us for it to have an impact. This does not make us bad people for not stopping to experience the events of others, because they are in fact, just that, the events of others. We are called into these experiences when the time is right. The thing that brought peace to me was the the sun reflecting off the perfect waves and a group of surfers who were out enjoying the great conditions on their longboards. It was their event, their experience. Hopefully they will remember it as much as I will mine of that same day.

At about 1:30pm, Dr. Carlos gave us the ok to load up the car and head back to SP for the hospital. I think I might have lasted about 45 minutes before the adrenalin caught up with me and I asked Katie to drive. I passed out immediately and two hours later we arrived at the hospital.

Although, it was only 4:30 pm it felt like it was 10:00pm at night. I would like to say that things like this don´t happen to us very often, but they seem to happen with frequency. Hopefully Flynn´s life will be blessed with many moments as exciting as his birth. Moments like these are what define life and make it worth living.

So, here´s to Flynn. As an American-Irish-Brasilian, the borders of the world are open to you.

How to Use Social Tools without Becoming One

There are various social and business networking digital tools that we would recommend to all Globonders and Friends because they are free, convenient and extremely powerful. In order not to overwhelm any of the stubbornly persistent self-proclaimed Luddites or in politer terms, technology skeptics, in this article we will focus only on two of the most important ones, Facebook and Twitter.

First about Facebook: For those of you who already want to protest that you will never agree to use Facebook because 1) you don’t want to be contacted by ex lovers 2) you don’t have time 3) you want to protect your privacy or 4) you don’t want to mix your personal and professional life, we have news for you. With regards to former high school crushes, Facebook allows you to ignore any unwanted requests to be connected. With regards to time, the busiest people use Facebook to better leverage their demanding schedule and keep their life integrated.
Concerning privacy we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but your privacy is already pretty much a thing of the past and Facebook is not going to aggravate that situation in any way if you learn how to manage the system (which is what Globond can help you do). And finally, speaking about mixing your personal and professional life, if you are a Globonder we already expect you to have those two in synch and balanced as we do not deal with just one or the other (business and social carry equal weight at Globond).

The day that Ken Rutkowski sent an email to Kirstin saying “get thee on Facebook because all of the cool people are on there” she responded immediately, no questions, no arguing and just made her profile. And if you see her list of Facebook friends you will see that Ken’s advice was super solid. Being on Facebook also allows Kirstin and the rest of the Globond Team to better leverage, promote, connect and otherwise support the Globonders but only if you do your part and have a profile up there. If you are still not on Facebook do not wait any longer. A Sci Fi Book with a Purpose

I do not like Sci Fi Books as a rule and it took me 3 or 4 attempts to get into this book. To be honest, I only persisted in trying to read Klystar because it was written by a Globonder, Dr. Leong Ying, a nuclear physicist and marathoner who has discovered a mathematical, physics formula which proves the Existence of God. This theory is called The Universal Laws of Thermodynamics. Anyway on the third or fourth try I did become captivated by the story and the big issues that Leong addresses. In fact, I could not put this book down and read it in just two sittings. In addition to telling a great tale, Ying, a PHD in nuclear physics, explains his scientific proof of God in a an easy to understand, powerful way for non-scientists. Read this book not only because it is interesting but also because the author, a former atheist, has discovered the bridge between Faith and Science and he is one to watch! Don’ts:

Raising Your Bar: Think of Authoring Your Book

As a Globonder, striving to enhance your business success and influence for the good of the world, have you written a book yet? To do so is to raise the bar of your reputation, which leads to relationships and revenues.

Several things give evidence of your professional and business competency and stature, such as advanced degrees, top universities, prestige affiliations, awards/honors and publications. Perhaps the most dramatic sign that you are an authority in your field having authored a book. Articles are good too, but a book puts you in a bigger league.

You can author your book alone or with others. It could also be the work of a ghostwriter, editor or book doctor; but as long as your name is on the cover, you get the credit. It can be a thin or thick volume; the length matters less than the fact that you are the (apparent) author. Hard or soft cover is not that key anymore. It used to count that your publisher was well known, but this is less important now that self-publishing and e-books are considered reasonable options. Hopefully the book will get many and good reviews, but then you need only quote the good ones. Then there are the book’s sales: short of a best seller (which I wish on you!), no one has to really know how many copies you sold or have in storage.

What does your book demonstrate? That you have something that you believe is worth writing in book length and publishing. The book shows that you took the time, effort and expense to produce it. If you feel deeply about the content of your book, then the world needs to access and benefit from it and you! It enhances your reputation as a speaker and trainer, if your book mentioned in the introduction and is for sale at the event. Few things are more symbolic of your graciousness and status than giving your book as a gift to someone, and especially personalizing it with your hand-written inspirational message in the front of the book.

How easy is it to come out with a book? It depends on several things:

How good a writer are you? No matter how good, you still need someone to edit your work and give you feedback.
How much discretionary time do you have to write the book? If not so much, then consider a ghostwriter.
Do you have enough to say to create a book? If you believe in yourself and your work, then you do. If you feel a few aspects of your knowledge are missing, then do research or hire a researcher (ghostwriters usually can do the research).

If you are busy and successful, you may at least have the time to write out the book’s concept and an outline of the chapters, and maybe a proposal or even a sample (usually the first) chapter. If not, it is respectable to hire a ghostwriter to walk you through the process and interview you along the way. Nearly all famous people do it.

Members will fill out the Premium Services Assessment Form to indicate the services they believe they need in order to raise the bar on their success potential. This Form will be sent to all members. It uses a scale of from 1 to 10, with 1 = extreme need and urgency for the service, and 10 = already doing excellently in this area so no need for it at all.

5. New 30-60-90-Day Action Plan for Globonders

The Globond Team is in the process of using a new format to specify what new and current Members can expect from Globond and should do themselves in order to reach their goals. Actions will be given for 30, 60 and 90 days, to constitute a plan. In time all current Members will receive such a plan. Together Team and Members can make your goals reality.

6. Globond’s Member Payments

The Globond Team wants to share with Globond Members the risks and rewards of business. This is the basis of the payments each Globonder makes to Globond International, Inc.

Membership in Globond involves these three types of payments:

Annual membership fee. This includes the Basic Services to achieve your stated goals, $10,000.
Premium Services fees (optional). The Globond Team discusses and recommends certain of these to elevate and accelerate your success potential; fees, usually at a discount, are set by and paid to the service providers.
Success fees. These performance-based fees are based on achieving financial goals (paid when the cost of the annual membership is exceeded), and extremely valuable goal achievements; the specific amount or percentage of these fees are negotiated with the Member.

Don’t You Dare… Use “Gratuitous Information”

Don’t’ you dare waste your (or our) time and dissipate our (or your) energy by giving information that is not necessary to the story you are telling.

Let’s say you are listening to a colleague or friend speaking about the economic recession, a new restaurant or his/her unfolding divorce. And he/she is going on far too long. You sense there are simply too many details coming your way. You are interested in the topic, probably out of respect for the person, but not that interested!

The problem is probably related not just to the quantity of information received, but even more to its quality – meaning its lack of quality. Let’s call this low-quality stuff “gratuitous information,” or GI for short. Gratuitous means superfluous, unnecessary or unjustified. We simply do not need it and so we do not like it.

Here is an example: Your colleague is describing how much he likes sushi, while everyone in the group is ordering their favorite sushi pieces and rolls. Suddenly he adds how last year he was at a sushi restaurant and what he ordered smelled funny to him, what he dubs the “great risk of sushi.” The issue is not the truth of his statement and experience, rather it is about his judgment. Or in this case, a dubious judgment of what he said and his not thinking through the unintended consequence of his words on the mood of the group.

Why do people include GI in their communications?

It could be they simply cannot tell the difference between what is important and want is fluffy or even off-putting.
Or they have a need to share and be understood and mistakenly think that their story is interesting to others as well.
Or they are thinking and speaking so fast that they are not evaluating the probable impact of what they are uttering.
Or they believe that “colorful” content, what we now call GI, makes them look more interesting.

Now that you realize how much you do not appreciate GI when others speak or write, how about looking in the mirror and identifying GI in you speaking and writing. Ask yourself these questions:

What are my best points to make on this topic? And stick to your mental or written list. Oh, a few examples and short stories can add clarity and color, but don’t go too far off the track.
How much detail and what type of detail are appropriate to this listener, topic and situation? It is usually better to say less than you might like, thus giving the other person the courtesy of asking for more detail, if he needs it.
How much should I speak compared to listening to another person? Since you can usually learn more by listening to others than speaking yourself, endeavor to be focused and brief, thus allowing more time in the encounter to listen and learn.
How can I edit out potential GI from my conversations? Develop the skill of meta-listening, which is speaking slowly enough while you think ahead about what to say next, and then considering in a micro-second whether the prospective content is useful or GI.

So, don’t you dare use GI. And give gentle and constructive feedback to others about their GI. Let’s make the world safer for good communication!

Globond Success Stories

Building a portfolio of clients and friends. The founder of Globond International, Inc. Kirstin Elaine Myers was the first Globonder. In the 1990s, she went to Brazil as an executive to open the marketing/sales operations of the branch of a U.S.-based multinational company with an Internet-based product. Her company’s name was unknown in Brazil, and the Internet was very new. She spoke Portuguese, but did not have the business contacts in the fields she needed. In order to pay her high living expenses, but with an inexperienced sales team, she set aggressive sales targets. Through smart actions and long hours, in six months her sales team ranked #2 among the firm’s 17 offices worldwide but the cost was very high to her personally. To finally create a social life, she re-organized a long-running group that had been meeting at the same bar once a month, and turned it into a community of like-minded global citizens who socialized together at diverse settings. Soon virtually all of these friends became clients of one another, and all of her company’s clients became friends. After two years, her sales team had acquired 200 corporate clients in Brazil, and she had a large circle of friends. The Globond prototype was born.
Raising major capital. A Globonder, CEO of an education-related start-up, needed to raise seed money. Globond successfully closed the first $250,000 with an investor, who was the former President of a Fotune 500 corporation and now heads a textbook company. Globond also went to the Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation, a state agency that invests money in start-ups on condition that the company finds partners to match its investments. Although told by many “experts” that it was too early for MTDC to invest in this company, Globond kept up the momentum and opened doors with other investor prospects, including various angel groups and Massachusetts’s top female venture capitalist. Two venture capitalists that Globond introduced co-invested in several projects, which eventually included the Globonder’s educational start-up. MTDC contributed $600,000 to match the same amount invested by a local investor’s group which Globond had also brought to the table. Through Globond’s efforts, the end result for the start-up was $2 million in capital raised.
Proving and funding a new technology. A Globonder, who is an inventor, created an algorithm that optimizes the routing of transportation vehicles in such a way that they are always full of paying passengers, who have continuous, convenient access to green, affordable transportation. Globond has put him in front of state, local and federal government officials (including the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center), and senior executives of the leading car-sharing, limo and car rental companies. This work has culminated in a pilot project in which a casino has given the Globonder its monthly data of over 2,500 limo rides to bring customers to its entertainment complex. Globond has also retained its member’s former professor in MIS Operational Systems, who teaches at Harvard University and Salem State College, as a technical advisor and sales engineer. Upon completion of the pilot, Globond will close business with large car rental company, car sharing company, Federal and State Government Transportation projects who have all expressed interest in the algorithm and simply want to see that it works (hence the pilot). as new clients of the inventor Globonder , and the New York-New Jersey Port Authority’s decongestion project.With the potential of this transportation system to be national and international in scope, and funded through customers and strategic partners, the Globonder is on his way to becoming both wealthy and successful, leaving a legacy behind as well.
Working the system to get visas. Globond was asked to help plan the 10th Anniversary of the World Summit of Young Entrepreneurs, organized by the World Trade University of the United Nations, and to be held in Sao Paulo in 2006. Globond selected the keynote speakers, panelists and workshop presenters, arranged the topics, and invited world-class entrepreneurs from around the world. Some of the international speakers and participants were told at their Brazilian Embassies\Consulates that a visa would take three weeks or longer to process; the Summit was to start in a week and a half. WTU’s head told Globond, “Forget about the speakers…even the UN cannot violate international protocol.” Globond forged ahead and requested help from Brazil’s Minister of Immigration, who ordered that a letter be sent to every Brazilian Embassy/Consulate in the world, telling them to be on the lookout for visa requests on the WTU or Globond letterheads. All of the speakers and participants got their visas in time to attend the event on time and one visa was even processed in less than 24 hours.
Landing a World Bank job. A Japanese-Brazilian Globonder was a Senior Telecom Analyst for a major bank in Sao Paulo. As he was often in the media and well known in his industry, he did not feel free to openly seek other job opportunities. Asked by Globond what his dream job would be, he replied to work at the World Bank, but considered that to be impossible. Globond made phone calls, and found current and former World Bank employees to advise him. Competing against several thousand candidates, this Globonder got his dream job, working in a prestigious role involving the Middle East and Africa.
Receiving VIP treatment in India. Two Chinese-American female friends, a TV-commercial-and-film producer and an actress and real estate broker, called Globond to say they were leaving for India the next day, and asked for help in meeting people with places to stay and assistance in enjoying their visit. Globond searched its network and came up with various options immediately, including an offer by an Indian executive in London for his corporate discount rate at a top hotel. The result was that they chose the home of an Indian film producer who also picked them up at the airport. These Globonders were treated like VIPs on their first trip to India.
Getting the right job in the right country. A Colombian telecom executive in Brazil had left the telecom sector to work in a series of consulting firms, each time with increased responsibility and compensation. When at 28 years of age, he wanted to return to telecom in a more senior position, colleagues discouraged him from trying this in Brazil, his preferred destination, and advised him to move to the U.S., where they said he would have more lucrative opportunities. He wanted to stay in Brazil, however, so Globond introduced this Globonder to the major companies with the attractive opportunities, and then served as a character reference for him during the due-diligence phase. He ended up accepting a $250,000 a year position with a global telecom company based in Brazil.
Getting an almost-impossible reservation. Two Globonders, an American power couple – the husband is a money manager for an investment fund and the wife is a serial entrepreneur – told Globond that would celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary in Nantucket, MA. They said that their dream was to dine at the Black Pearl, a restaurant so exclusive that one has to make reservations months in advance. Although Globond learned that the waiting list was pages long, with one phone call and a return call Globond persuaded the restaurant maitre d’ to say he would do what he could. A phone call from the ecstatic Globonder wife said that the couple was inside the Black Pearl, at the best table and the center of attention. We later learned that her husband was friends with the owner but had not been able to get in with that connection.

This Non-Circumvention & Non-Disclosure Agreement (“Agreement”) is entered into as of this --- day of ---------, 20-- (“Effective Date”), and is by and between Globond International Inc. (“Globond”), established in Massachusetts, USA, whose address is 23R Elm Street, Gloucester, MA 01930-3725, and ------------- (Company), established in --------, -----, whose address is ---------------, together with each of Globond’s and the Company’s officers, directors, shareholders, agents, employees, consultants, attorneys and affiliates.

WHEREAS, each signatory Party possesses certain information, not known by any other Party.

WHEREAS, the parties are initially desirous of conducting various business transactions in contact with third parties introduced by another Party(s) to this Agreement, for the mutual benefit of all Parties, and the undersigned parties agree, in the consideration of the foregoing promises, to abide by the following terms and conditions:

Non-Circumvention: Each Party agrees not to directly or indirectly contact, deal with, transact, or otherwise be involved with any corporation, partnership, proprietorships, trust, individuals, or other entities introduced by another Party without the specific written permission of the introducing Party. The Parties further agree not to directly or indirectly circumvent, avoid or bypass each other regarding any contracts, renewals, cooperation, partnerships, proprietorships, trusts, or other business relationships with entities introduced or disclosed by any Party.

Each person and entity that is introduced by one Party to the other Party shall be identified in a Rider attached to this Agreement.

In the event a Party breaches this covenant of non-circumvention, then, in addition to any and all damages and amounts the non-breaching Party has a right to recover, the non-breaching Party shall be entitled to recover, as liquidated damages, fifty percent (50%) of the compensation, remuneration and monies the breaching Party receives, or as a right to receive, directly or indirectly, as a result of the breaching Party's actions. The non-breaching Party's right to receive liquidated damages is a non-exclusive remedy.
The rights, obligations and restrictions of this covenant of non-circumvention shall survive the expiration or termination of this Agreement for a period of two (2) years thereafter.
Non-Disclosure: Each party agrees not to disclose or otherwise reveal to any third Party any non-publicly available information provided by a disclosing party, including without limitation, identities, addresses, telephone numbers, facsimile numbers, email addresses, facsimile numbers, bank codes, account numbers, financial references, technical specifications, or project information without the specific written permission of the disclosing Party.

The Party receiving the confidential information will limit access to said information to only those of the receiving Party's employees and authorized representatives having a need to know and who are bound by confidentiality agreements or other such restrictions.
Term: This Agreement is valid for the following term: Five (5) years from the Effective Date of this Agreement.
Parties Bound: This Agreement shall be binding upon all undersigned Parties and their heirs, successors, associates, affiliates and assigns. Each Party shall take reasonable steps to ensure that its Employees, Agents, Representatives, Officers, Independent Contractors, Shareholders, Principals and other third Parties abide by the provisions of this Agreement.
Notice: All notices, demands, or requests given by the Parties shall be in writing transmitted to the other Party(s) at the last facsimile number or address the Party has designated.
Language: The language in all the Agreements shall be in all cases constructed simply according to fair meaning and not strictly for or against either of the Parties and it is agreed that the English language will be used.
Severability: Should any portion of this Agreement be declared invalid or unenforceable, then such portion shall be deemed to be severable from this Agreement and shall not effect the remainder herein.
Integration: This Agreement constitutes the entire Non-Circumvention & Non-Disclosure Agreement between the Parties and supersedes all prior discussions, negotiations, and Agreements, whether oral or written. The Parties further intend that this Agreement constitutes the complete and exclusive statement of its terms and that no extrinsic evidence whatsoever may be introduced in any judicial or arbitration process involving this Agreement.
Amendments: Any change or amendment to this Agreement, including oral modification supported by new consideration, must be put to writing and signed by all Parties before it will be effective.
Waiver: No waiver or default of any of this Agreement by any Party shall be implied from any omission of such Party to take action against the defaulting Party. One or more waivers of any covenant, terms or conditions of this Agreement by any Party shall not be considered to be a waiver of render, unnecessary consent or approval of said Party of any subsequent or similar acts or omission.
Governing Law: This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the internal laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts without reference to conflict of laws and legal principles.
Attorney’s Fees: If any Party files any action or brings any proceeding against others arising from this Agreement, or is made a party to any action or proceedings arising from this Agreement, the prevailing Party shall be entitled to recover as an element of is cost to suit and not as damages, reasonable attorney’s fees to be fixed by the court, arbitrator or adjudicative authority. The prevailing Party shall be the Party entitled to recover its cost to suit or arbitration, whether or not entitled to recover costs.
Relationship: The Parties hereto shall not be deemed to be Partners or Joint Ventures, and no Party shall be liable for any other Party’s commitments or liabilities resulting from execution of this Agreement.
Force and Effect of Documents: The Parties hereto agree that a signed telefax or other facsimile copy of this Agreement shall have the full force and effect as the original of this document.

After years of interaction with Globonders and Friends of Globond (FOG), we have nailed down specific behaviors and habits that benefit all of us and make us unique. As Globonders and Friends, we share uncommon values that connect us together and make us ethical, world-changing team players. By maintaining these values, we move each other forward and attract new members along the way who are moved by our example.

We at Globond are extremely excited because we are getting more and more extraordinary people around us all the time! These folk already respect a system of ethics naturally, without thinking about it most of the time. But we felt we had to codify these principles into a Code of Conduct so that everyone would understand what being a Globonder really means.

No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. It is the striving to be your best and admitting when you make a mistake that shows a person’s true character. Nothing more can be expected of someone than their best. When one has doubts as to what that is, there is the Code to remind them of the right thing to do in a given situation.

One example of an exceptional person is a Globonder who left a secure job he had held for four years and with lots of fringe benefits. The business relationships in his company, however, lost their focus and he witnessed some questionable behavior. As soon as this became clear, he stepped away from the secure money, left the company and took on a new position with more risk but with the chance to make a bigger impact and to do a lot of good. Another amazing person we met is a FOG now in the process of becoming a Globonder. He made millions of dollars from a company he helped to create, but sees that his partners have left behind their grand vision to contribute to a better world and instead follow the anything-for-money path. So, he has decided to leave and to start again from scratch. We have put together a 30-60-90 day plan for him and cannot wait to get started.

Tectonic Leadership™ and the Summit

Before answering the questions "What is Tectonic Leadership™?" and "Why should one attend a Tectonic Leadership™ Summit™?", we need to briefly assess where we--as human beings--stand today. The success of our species--first in agriculture, then in the development of language, the growth and sophistication of knowledge, the quest for deeper meaning, spirituality, order--has culminated in a world of dwindling resources fed by ever-expanding consumption and exploitation, and almost continual warfare caused by deepening polarization around our differences—ethnic, religious, cultural, political. Ironically, our progress has led to the threat of annihilation.

So what can we do? Looking at any one of the issues facing humanity today--all of them global in scale--it would be easy to slip into feelings of futility, cynicism, despair. But many thought leaders around the world are resisting the seduction of hopelessness and are searching instead for ways to heal seemingly impassible ruptures between peoples of differing ideologies; to bridge the growing gap between developed and developing nations, and create sustainable solutions for the use of our shared natural resources.

Globonders, who themselves are leaders in addressing many of these issues, began a year ago to discuss the need to provide a forum where those at the forefront of change can be fed with ideas--supported and encouraged in what is often a lonely endeavor. After many discussions about the seeming paradox that exists in every global challenge--cutting down on greenhouse gases without disrupting existing and emerging economies; settling land disputes without displacing millions; stimulating economies without sacrificing fiscal discipline--the notion of a leadership summit took shape.

Globonder Samia Bahsoun coined the term Tectonic Leadership™ because she saw a useful metaphor in the way Earth's tectonic plates interact at their boundaries; how understanding the parameters of those boundaries--where earthquakes occur when the natural elasticity of surrounding rock is exceeded, or where compression builds mountains, or tension leads to volcanic eruption and the creation of new crust--can give us an understanding of future outcomes and a reinterpretation of those processes as predictable and non-destructive. So human interactions can similarly create fault systems of fear and hatred between us until we move fearlessly toward our differences, using them instead to create common intent and the commitment to resolve the many global challenges we share.

The Tectonic Leadership™ Summit is a working summit, where participants are introduced to the paradoxical approach to problem solving. Paradoxical thinking is used to remove the notion of right answers vs. wrong answers; good ideologies vs. bad ideologies; to help individuals and nations reverse the distrust that leads to protectionism or warfare. Paradox seen in its original meaning--para: beyond and doxa: common sense or popular opinion--provides a means to liberate the proponents of any given opinion to move from the divisiveness and separateness that comes from advocating one standpoint over another to the freedom that comes from shared responsibility and a new level of leadership.

Globonders that have renewed their memberships

Beatrice (Bia) de Salles

Bia de Salles was born a citizen of the world. Although she grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she has always had a bird's eye view of her place in the world. The great grand-daughter of a former Brazilian President and the grand-daughter of Senators, she traveled from her earliest years, staying with her mother’s relatives from the Italian nobility or visiting her Ambassador Uncle in Europe. At the age of 14, Bia was sent to an International girls boarding school for languages and finishing skills in a town near Geneva, Switzerland. It was there that she became a polyglot to make other polyglots envious: In addition to her native Portuguese, Bia is fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, French and German, and has a basic knowledge of Dutch, Japanese, Hebrew and Chinese. She is a lifelong learner, with an MBA from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Partnership with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business. She also has a degree in Law from Mackenzie University in Sao Paulo, and has studied Marketing, International Affairs and Human Resources at various places. People are drawn by her positive energy and have always been interested and inspired by her generous soul.

All Globonders are “well-connected” by definition but Bia takes that term to a whole new level: Some years ago, Bia introduced Kirstin to her friend "Martin" at the Harvard Club Dinner the night before an HBS Latin American conference at which Globond was a VIP guest. The next day Kirstin realized that "Martin" was none other than serial entrepreneur, billionaire and philanthropist Martin Varsavsky who was the event’s keynote speaker. In the summer of 2000, Bia called Kirstin from India to tell her about her new friend, a Wall Street Journal reporter named “Daniel” whom she had met in China. She insisted that Kirstin set up a conference call to tell him about Globond which was still in its prelaunch phase. “Daniel” and Kirstin exchanged friendly emails about being mutual friends of Bia, and planned to have a conference call. The call never took place because “Daniel” was kidnapped and later murdered in Karachi, Pakistan. Bia's “new friend” turned out to be none other than Daniel Perl, the American journalist who had served as the South Asia Bureau Chief of the WSJ and was stationed in Bombay to interview Richard Reid, the journalist that was investigating the Taliban.

Kirstin met Bia for the first time before Globond was officially established, on one of Kirstin’s visits to Brazil. Before, they had even met, Bia insisted that Kirstin stay at her beautiful penthouse in Sao Paulo, and. A year after they met for the first time, Bia, who had been born privileged, left all of her possessions behind in Brazil and came to the United States alone to make it by herself. She moved back and forth between the East and West Coast in a number of positions until she finally settled down to build a life in Palm Springs, California.

During the summer of 2001 Bia called Kirstin from Hong Kong to give the good news that she had finally been sponsored by Morgan Stanley and was relocating to NY. Her official start date for her new job in The World Trade Center was September, 10, 2001... the next day, Kirstin was inundated with phone calls and email from concerned friends and family asking if Bia was alive. Kirstin learned that Bia had been on her way to work that morning when the planes hit the Towers . She spent the next few months in New York City with other shell-shocked friends helping one another to get through the crisis.

Still Bia didn't give up and Kirstin picked her up from Logan Airport 3 weeks later and dropped her at The Leonx Hotel for an interview with the board of a Private Equity Team in Boston. 14 days later she started working as an Investors Relations Manager for a Boutique Private Investment Bank in Los Angeles, where she got her sponsorship and later her green-card. She is now married to Ata Yazici, a graphic designer from Instanbul and they have two children, Lorenzo and Annalise. They live in Palm Springs, California where she has served as the Marketing Officer for Desert Commercial Bank in Palm Desert and as the Events Promoter for EventNet in the Palm Springs region.

Bia is currently part of the Women Leaders Forum in the Coachella Valley and serves on the Board of the Center of Leadership and Partnership Studies with Dr. Riane Eisler, PHD. She is an Ambassador to several local Chambers of Commerce and has worked with the World Economic Forum in DC, India, China and Davos, Switzerland. She previously worked at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at the Harvard Business School, where she invited companies to attend their various Summits, and also served as a panel mediator. Paul H. Granger

Paul H. Granger defines himself as “a businessman’s lawyer.” Paul was born in Worcester, MA and raised in a small town in Central Massachusetts called Leicester (his 93 year old Dad still lives there). He’s lived in the Boston area ever since attending law school in Boston.

Paul started his law career as an environmental lawyer with one of the Massachusetts state agencies, and then jumped into the business world when he joined Arthr D. Little, where he was in charge of global contracting and also served as an Export Control Officer. AD Little was a fascinating place to work, filled with many unique and very talented colleagues involved in very diverse work across many disciplines. At one point the Company operated its consulting business from 50 offices in 30 countries, and the nature of Paul’s responsibilities exposed him to many cultures and ways of doing business, an experience that continues to benefit him and his clients to this day. After a stint as an independent attorney, Paul signed on as General Counsel for Motion Technology, Inc., where he managed all aspects of the company's corporate legal matters, including corporate governance, litigation, intellectual property, real estate, and contracts.

He is now an attorney in the Boston office of Greenberg Traurig, which ranks as the 7th largest U.S. law firm by American Lawyer. Paul sees his practice at GT as just a continuation of what he’s been doing throughout his career, i.e. being a “businessman’s lawyer” and bringing many years of experience to bear when addressing client issues, whatever their nature. Paul has two children, Lisa and Mark. Lisa is a graduate of Merrimack College and has joined the working world. Christian Hunt

Christian Hunt is a 43-year-old Belgian national residing in Brazil since 2004. He is a Partner at Alothon Group LLC, a Latin American private equity firm investing in mid to late stage buyouts mostly in Brazil (ex Bankers Trust/Deutsche Bank Latin American private equity team). He also maintains interests in privately owned companies active in real estate development, wind power, information technology, services to individuals and the agribusiness.

Until 2004 Christian was Chief Executive of Europe Unlimited SA, a Brussels-based firm specializing in connecting European growth companies with venture capital and private equity investors.

Christian was previously Co-Founder and Chief Executive of the EMDS Group, an international graduate recruitment consultancy, which had the majority of Fortune Global 500 companies as clients. Among other things, Christian led the corporate expansion of EMDS into 15 countries across Europe, Asia and North America, through joint-ventures, acquisitions and green-field operations. In 2000, he co negotiated the merger of EMDS into Diversified Agencies Group, a division of Havas.

Christian is a supporter of social venturing and an advisor to NESsT, an international organization committed to reducing systemic poverty and social exclusion through the development of social enterprises. Masuda Sultan

Masuda Sultan is an Afghan-American who had dedicated her professional life to the development of Afghanistan and Afghan-American relations.

Initially, In 2001 Ms. Sultan assisted international media organizations covering Afghanistan including CBS and CNN. At this time she ran Women for Afghan Women (WAW), an international organization which advocates for the inclusion of women in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. At WAW she organized women around Afghanistan to give input into the constitution in its drafting process.

Ms. Sultan moved on to conduct research and training for Harvard University, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Institute of Peace, Inclusive Security, Hunt Alternatives Fund, and Radical Funds.

In recent years, she has worked in the areas of investment promotion, economic development, and business planning. In 2006 she founded Insight Consulting, an Afghan firm providing strategic consulting services to international investors and donors. Insight Consulting facilitated the largest private investment in Afghanistan when Etisalat, a U.A.E. based telecommunications company entered the market as the fourth GSM provider.

She currently serves as an advisor to the Ministry of Finance in Afghanistan. In this capacity, she provides technical assistance to the Government of Afghanistan on behalf of donor nations in the areas of public administration reform, private sector strengthening, privatization, and capacity building.

Ms. Sultan holds a Master’s degree from Harvard University, where she studied business and government relations. She is an advisor to the Afghan Business Council in Dubai, Arzu Rugs, and the Business Council for Peace.

Stefan Pagacik

Stefan Pagacik provides guidance and innovative thinking to organizations looking to solve global problems. John Canning

John Canning is a Los Angeles based Globonder who wears a variety of hats, some of which are the executive producer and videographer for Green Living Project, video game consultant for the Monitor Group, digital media consultant for Disney and Sr. Director of Business Development for Mary-Margaret Network, all under the aegis of his firm Media Sherpa Consulting and Productions. Media Sherpa draws on John's many areas of expertise as well as his vast experience, and allows him to focus on his two passions: Media production in the area of travel and sustainable causes and Cross-platform creation and distribution of interactive media.

John Canning has worked in the Media and Entertainment Industry since 1987 when he worked in the Interactive Television division of Scientific Atlanta. He spent his 10 years there in jobs ranging from Applications Architect/Systems Engineer to Project Manager while simultaneously earning a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Information Design and Technology from Georgia Tech. Since then, his career has spanned media production, delivery methods and multiple platforms.

In 1997, John joined Microsoft as a marketing manager for Cable. He was then made Product Manager for the TV division where he led the integration of VOD, interactive services, conditional access and billing for the Microsoft TV product line. John moved on to be Technical Evangelist at Microsoft's newly formed eHome division. There he led external evangelism for eHome applications and services, and worked with partners in media distribution, content, games and whole home control.

While at Microsoft, John also expanded his proficiency and began freelancing on the creative side of media. He worked as a producer, videographer, photographer and reporter for MSN, MSNBC and Slate.

In 2005, John moved to Yahoo! as Director of Content Distribution. In this role he was field Producer/reporter, Photographer, and 3rd Party liaison for the Richard Bangs Adventures series and was a producer for Yahoo Games and Entertainment.

Throughout his career, John has continued to expand his knowledge, his abilities, and his experience while excelling in his work. As part of that paradigm, he has developed skills and connections in Electronic Gaming, learning how to manage the media delivery life cycle from content creation and transmission to presentation platforms for Media and Games.

Laura Tapley

Rockport, Massachusetts-based Globonder Laura Tapley got her first job as a commercial artist (jewelry illustration) right after graduating from high school. She began college as an art major but was more attracted to academic studies. She was happily ensconced in a solid liberal arts program—German, French, Poli Sci, Literature, History, Chemistry, Trigonometry—when she got married. Laura planned to continue her education after getting married but that was not to be the case: Laura had her first child that year and became a busy mom. She started taking various freelance commercial art assignments—logo and ad design and set designing for a local community theatre, both of which she learned by doing. Laura had another child and began home-schooling her oldest when she was in second grade. She had read books about education in general and home-schooling in particular by John Holt but was thought of as a maverick by friends and peers for engaging in something so "revolutionary."

Laura had to work with school and elected officials to gain acceptance of this now popular alternative educational method. Home-schooling allowed her to take advantage of all the wonderful learning opportunities in the San Francisco Bay area. She served as a volunteer in the Discovery Room at the Academy of Sciences (museum) in San Francisco and her daughter served alongside her from the age of 8 to 10 years old. Mother and daughter both got to interact with various research scientists working in the labs behind the scenes at the museum. Other research projects were completed with the help of librarians. They had a blast talking with ambassadors, legislators, authors, artists, and historians. Laura began home-schooling her son as soon as he was ready for structured learning. Her daughter re-entered school in 7th grade as an honors student (even though some school officials were skeptical about her ability to succeed—she blew their socks off). She and her husband had their third child and soon after moved east, first to Colorado, then to Massachusetts. All her children were in public school in Rockport until, at the superintendent’s recommendation, her oldest daughter finished her high school Junior and Senior year home-schooling (the Superintendent had reviewed a paper she wrote on her home-schooling experience and was intrigued). Her daughter's experience settled the arguments of skeptics once again: she was accepted into Tisch School of the Arts at NYU based on her independent home-based studies.

Quite happy to let her other two children finish their education in public school, Laura remained a very active and involved parent, serving on the Excellence in Education ad hoc sub-committee of the School Board; on a drug and alcohol prevention committee with other parents, faculty, and students; and assisting the Elementary School Librarian. She also helped with school theater sets.

Finally, when Laura’s son was in high school and her youngest daughter was in third grade, she returned to college. She studied history and loved it, studied geology and loved it even more. She finished two years at the top of her class as a Presidential scholar. Laura worked as a tutor (for geology and history) and a TA for history, and was also the assistant to the Clerk in the Biology Department, while taking a full load of classes and maintaining a 4.0. She was given the incredible opportunity to help two geology professors with field research in Wyoming and Montana one summer. She also participated in a state-funded research project, gathering data and measuring light transmission and chemical content of water samples from Chebacco Lake. A divorce took its toll however, and Laura found herself once again having to pull out of school to work full time (her son was getting ready to attend college). She has had to work full time ever since, while putting her son and younger daughter through college.

She taught herself banking processes and regulations while working the first time at Rockport National Bank—initially in the Operations department; then in the Loan Administration department. Laura was then offered a position at the Boston Company in Boston that doubled her salary, but six months after moving to the Boston Company it was absorbed by Mellon. She was offered another position there as an Executive Assistant, but it was mind-numbingly boring. Her kind boss then offered to help her find another position which would more effectively utilize her skills.

Serendipity stepped in and Laura met a member of the Board of Rockport Chamber Music Festival on the train. The woman told Laura they were looking for a General Manager and she ended up being offered the position. She found herself again eagerly learning new skills and the language of non-profits and the music world. In each of her positions, starting at Rockport National Bank, Laura had been picking up technology skills. The IT departments at Boston Company and Mellon loved her because she asked questions, was eager to learn, and would trouble-shoot problems on her own. At the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, she taught herself Microsoft Access because they needed a relational database and couldn’t afford an off-the-shelf one. She had loads of fun designing and using a powerful database that tracked donations, members, musicians and ticket sales.

While working at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Laura was asked by former colleagues at Rockport National Bank to consider coming back to work there. She was perceived as someone who willingly accepted any challenge, liked learning anything new and taking on major projects. She eventually accepted their proposal to return to work as an officer there, writing her own ticket in terms of what she did. She became the manager of Information Technology and designed their entire Information Security program, which included an Info Security Policy, Business Continuity Plan, Pandemic Preparedness Plan, training for employees, and annual risk assessment of tech systems.

Laura is now starting her own company to focus on her passion for organization and design . She firmly believes that beauty, order, and efficiency must co-exist, and loves helping her clients discover their own path to orderliness. Guiding them toward good design, and helping them develop routines they can follow naturally to maintain order, she witnesses an increase in their productivity and efficiency that results from an environment that is both beautiful and organized. She is happy to work within any budget and incorporates green products and processes whenever possible.

Laura has volunteered in Rockport, on the Town Arts Committee (now defunct) the local Cultural Council and in the schools. She currently serves as Treasurer of seARTS (Society for the Encouragement of the Arts). She has taught Sunday School and has helped Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts earn their geology badges. She also taught a two-day class in geology to Freshmen biology classes at Rockport High and conducted short enrichment classes in geology at the Rockport Elementary School and a elementary school in Salem. Top Tips for Tough Times: Confessions of an Ex-Shopaholic

There’s no denying it, we’re all feeling the credit crunch. Of course, some of us are feeling it more than others, especially former shopaholics (like me) who are desperately trying to reform.

Practically every magazine, tabloid and newspaper under the sun is offering countless of belt-tightening tips, both of the literal and figurative kind. Yet if you’re still feeling as stuck as a deer in headlights, then start getting your creative juices flowing and pull together your personal ‘Ex-Shopaholic Survival Kit’, listing the life-changing actions which you can do right now.

Here are my personal top tips for tough times, which hopefully will inspire you to start thinking about your own–after all, change is but a checklist away.

Now is the time to focus on self-care. Have fun and don’t bother about what is happening in trends, fashion or shopping. Take care of your inside and your outside will shine. Splurge on meditation, buy a used positive visualization CD on Amazon, or trade one with friends. Commit to flossing, even if you don’t do it every day. Commit to yourself and your own health, then enroll the rest of the family.

Now is the time to throw out all that is unnecessary. Find out what really gives you joy and to pass it on to others. Now is the time to use what you already have, and get rid of what you don’t need. Go through your house and weed through the clutter, give away things that are taking up space. Enjoy a moment of empty space and lightness. In this day and age, empty space is a luxury we can all afford. Lighten up your load and you will feel like a million bucks.

Now is the time to upgrade one habit with another. Maybe you’re an ex-shopaholic too. So instead of buying new items, upgrade your threads by taking old costume jewellery or beads and sewing them onto your favourite tunic top or jeans. Have fun and experiment by mixing and matching old outfits.

Now is the time to trade up your addictions. Substitute your daily Starbucks fix with a homemade shake using healthy ingredients. Clean up your act from the inside-out. Enjoy a new sense of freedom and live it up in a different way. Become addicted to working out or take a walk with the family after dinner every evening. Instead of watching TV and playing with electronics, find other (more inspiring) hobbies that don’t involve technology or machines. Remember the simpler times and reclaim forgotten skills.

Now is the time to use your creativity in a new way. Shut off all of your electrical gadgets, from the TV and cell phones to e-games and the computer. Start to get to know your family members more intimately. Plan a family night around a fire and tell stories. Maybe you have some hidden talents that you haven’t explored. Let each member share a secret. This could be a night of inspiration and encouragement for all. Step outside of the box and be free.

Now is the time to explore simple pleasures and affordable luxuries. Set aside an hour for yourself to be alone in a bubble bath or surprise your mate and do it together. Create your own spa retreat at home, and look on the web for home made spa treatments you can experiment with. Find out how to make rich skin creams from olive oil and avocado, or face and body scrub recipes from a dash of oatmeal. Go into your kitchen and discover different ways of utilizing fresh ingredients.

Now is the time to try out that new recipe. Make cooking a family affair or with your BFF’s. Arrange a gourmet family/friends night where each member is enlisted to perform a specific culinary task, so that everyone can join in the cooking fun. Make this a night to remember by rediscovering the pleasure of the ‘we’ over the ‘I’.

Now is the time to go green. Instead of looking for all that is bigger, better and newer, find out how to become more eco-conscious. What can you do today to make your home more sustainable and eco-efficient? What do you need to do for the future? Discover that green thumb. Get your hands dirty, feel the earth between your fingertips and forget your manicure for a week. Perhaps you could start growing a small organic vegetable garden or install some ceiling fans to prepare for the summer months? Or perhaps you could invest in some portable heaters for the rooms that are used the most and save on the energy bills in winter?

Now is the time to let the sunshine in. Make sure each day you find a few minutes to spend outside in nature. Steal away to enjoy peaceful moments spent walking in the park or hanging with the family dog. This is truly the time to get closer to nature, and to stop and smell the roses. One of the biggest things lacking in our health is adequate vitamin D. And that can only come from one source, namely the sun. Artificial lighting, sun glasses and sunblock are keeping us from allowing the sun’s rays to penetrate into our cells. Living It Up in a Down Economy

Talk about bad timing. A new movie, Confessions of a Shopaholic, is was released at the lowest point in our economic downturn, although postponing things in an attempt to avoid mass offence sounds like a far better idea. Things are rough for practically everyone these days, especially for an artistic soul. It seems as though everyone is feeling the pinch–except for the stratospherically rich of course, who are now finding that Living the 5-Star Life is even better than ever. For these lucky few, the New Economy is tantamount to cruising the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles at 3 a.m. on a Sunday morning. No traffic, no riff-raff. Just smooth cruising all the way. Here in Hollywood, you will still see the young and restless shopping, but now they’re having a right field day at the ultra-hip Fred Segal. This is just one of the many trend-setting boutiques that line Melrose Avenue which are packed with overpriced things you don’t need (unless your name ends with Hilton, Lohan or Trump.)

Just yesterday, as I was stuck in gridlock during on of the city’s rare rainstorms, I spotted an empty parking spot right in front of the boutique. I usually visit during the yearly ‘must-go’ Fred Segal Fall Sale, which rigorously happens only once a year in September. But wait…was that a sign up that read ‘75% off!’–in January? The most upscale store in town, which never has another sale, was in fact having a huge sale–again. And it’s not just happening over at Fred Segal. All across town, from Barneys to Bloomingdales, there are countless of sales being held. For shopaholics, it’s as if they have died and gone to heaven. Yet for most of us, this is just not an option. Nevertheless, I just had to stop by to see what was available. I told myself that I would only consider anything under $50, but when I stepped inside, I realized that most of the items on the racks were similar to things I already had–in fact, my threads are much nicer. I reminded myself of all the clothes in my closet that I haven’t worn in a couple of years, confirming the fact that if you have good taste and buy right, your clothes will transcend the latest trends. All you need are a couple of accent pieces, such as the latest scarf or a funky piece of costume jewellery and voilà, you’re ready to step into S/S 09.

Now is the time to shop your own closet. For most of us, unless you gain or lose weight, you will have enough clothes for at least the next few seasons. Who cares about the latest Ed Hardy jeans showered with metallic glitter, rhinestones and drips of paint? Go out and buy some spray paint and you’ll have your own designer jeans. And then when someone asks, ‘Who’s the designer?’ you can proudly reply, ‘Me!’

Now is the time to be creative, have fun and not care about what’s happening in trends, fashion or shopping. Take care of your inside and your outside will shine. Give yourself the gift of Extreme Self Care. Splurge on meditation, peaceful moments walking in the park and smelling the roses.

Now is the time to find out what really gives you joy and to pass it on to others. Now is the time to use what you already have, and get rid of what you don’t need. Now is the time to change from being a shopaholic to a creativity addict. Step out of the box and be free. Do something different, give away the things you don’t use and enjoy a moment of empty space and lightness. Now is the time to give up your addictions and clean up your act from the inside-out. Enjoy a new sense of freedom and live it isp in a different way.

Can you be over-charged and still reset? Yes if you are a Tectonic Leader™

You have probably seen or read about the recent meeting between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her counterpart Sergei Lavrov. Clinton began by taking out a pretty little yellow box which contained a red button, and she beamed at him, saying "I would like to present you with a little gift that represents what President Obama and Vice President Biden and I have been saying and that is: 'We want to reset our relationship and so we will do it together". Then she continued by saying to Lavrov, "We worked hard to get the right Russian word. Do you think we got it?" Well, Secretary of State Clinton did not get it, as the Russian Foreign Minister readily pointed out: "You got it wrong!" It turns out that the chosen word, "Peregruzka" s – mistakenly substituted for Perezagruzka - is actually the Russian word for "overcharged" Such a not so subtle mistake, in an “overcharged” political climate, could have embarrassed the most skilled of diplomats; yet the incident did not seem to frazzle the US Secretary of State, who decided to stay on course with the “Intent” of the gift; she instead took Lavrov by the arm and said “"We won't let you do that to us. Let’s go have dinner Sergei”. Dinner we were told was relaxed and joyful. Minister Sergei Lavrov hailed as wonderful his relationship with her; Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised the visit as a new start in U.S.-Russian ties after their first one-on-one meeting.

What took place in this encounter is an expression of leadership, Tectonic Leadership™, a term coined by Globonder Samia Bahsoun that describes the type of leadership needed in “overcharged” political situations, challenging financial crisis, daunting environmental threat.

The Tectonic Leadership™ process begins with a clear definition of the problem at hand, ironically an “overcharged” political climate in this case. Secretary of State Clinton walked into the meeting the “Right Intent”, the second step in the process. As Etsko Schuitema, another Globonder, will affirm through his experience dealing with leadership matters and organizational dynamics (as described in his book “Intent”), it is the benevolence of that Intent that determines outcome.

In spite of the words on the button, written in Roman letters instead of Cyrillic, it is the willingness of the leader to step into the fault, transparently and with the right intent, that describes the “function of the Tectonic Leader™, the “tekton”, mason of the new relational architecture.”

“Tectonic Leadership™ is not about having all the answers. It not about knowledge nor is it about common sense.” Condoleezza Rice, fluent in Russian and an expert on Russia, had all the “common” knowledge but failed to deliver; in fact the gap widened during her tenure. The Tectonic Leader™ will assume and accept that the boundaries of conflict do shift and are paradoxical, sometimes as confusing and fuzzy as PEREGRUZKA and PEREZAGRUZKA ; yet by choice and with the Right Intent, they can be “Overcharged” or “Reset”. Secretary of State Clinton and Minister Lavrov seemed to have made that choice last week. So can we!

Biography of Joseph Alexander

Joseph Alexander began his bright career as a public speaker and performer in a little church in Des Moines, Iowa. Even at an early age his leadership shined through, placing him on local television by the time he was 4 years old. As he grew up, his interest in music and performance grew. He tried various instruments, sang in many choirs and musical groups, and appeared on stage in school drama productions. With all the music filling his life in the Mid-west, he was still not quite satisfied. He read many books and dreamed of far away places and began learning his first foreign language by sitting in on his older sister's French studies.

Eventually, he spent six years studying the French language and taught himself the basics of German, Italian and Hebrew by the time he went to College. Though he had an aptitude and interest in science, he was sure for years that he wanted to become a lawyer. He figured that was the career that would get him to the lands of these wonderful languages. So he majored in Medieval European History and minored in Political Science and English Literature. His university experience was a dreamland as he explored the foundations of many cultures, the events, the literature and art which informs modern society.

He left the MidWest to attend law school at Boston University. Full of confidence and hope, he took on the laborious studies with ease. All the hours in the library paid off with a position at the prestigious Boston law firm Goodwin Proctor LLC, working on high profile transactions. But a visit to India during one Summer break gave him the itch for international travel. He visited India again at the end of his first year in the law firm and realized he wanted to work directly to improve the lives of people who did not have his privileged American lifestyle. Eventually, he went to Thailand to work for a Community Development organization. He spent 3 years in Thailand, and became fluent in the language, including 2 dialects. His facility with the language allowed him to work as a guide for various business and government leaders visiting the country, as well as more direct work with people in rural communities. After teaching in a prestigious university for a cross-cultural program, he decided he had more to learn from his home culture. He returned to the US and to the practice of law.

He went to at another large law firm, Burns & Levinson LLP, where he was able to craft the international practice he had dreamed of. At this time he began his study of Mandarin as well as his interest in Intellectual Property law. The Dot Com era allowed Joseph to discover that he could be creative as a lawyer and that he could continue the community development work that he loved. He left that firm for a position that combined his passions and interests, and went to teach at the Harvard Law School in its community law center. He was naturally supportive and demanding of his students and helped them make a difference in the lives of many small businesses and local homeowners. This position deepened his interest and expertise in intellectual property. Later he received a prestigious Fulbright award to research the effects of Intellectual Property laws on traditional medicine in Sri Lanka.

In Sri Lanka he learned about traditional healing practices, and was fascinated by the use of "Energy." After teaching at a local law school and doing research, he stayed in Sri Lanka to work as a legal consultant for international finance deals. While on a visit to the US he began taking yoga classes in New York City. He fell in love with the yoga and New York and decided to stay. He had been practicing yoga since his first trip to India, but had not been this involved and consistent. He soon found an apartment and a job and took the yoga classes so earnestly that he eventually trained to become an instructor at the Dahn Yoga Centers. After a while, he did so well as an instructor that he decided to give up his legal practice; however, Dahn’s New York/New Jersey regional organization, CGI, Inc., needed a lawyer and one of their new instructors happened to be a corporate lawyer. He has done a marvelous job juggling the responsibilities of managing a yoga studio with those of legal counsel of a growing business. The result is a wonderful synergy of practical and inspirational approaches to life. Joseph Alexander is an outstanding, talented individual with humility and courage. His smile is deep, genuine and infectious. When you meet Joseph, get ready for your life to change.....for the better.

Biography of Philip Berry

Philip Berry is the Managing Principal of Berry Block and Bernstein LLC which is a global management consulting, executive coaching and training practice. They will specialize in the areas of leadership training, global talent management, global diversity, innovation, team building, corporate social responsibility, employee relations effectiveness and affirmative actions compliance. Philip Berry was previously Vice President, Global Workplace Initiatives for Colgate-Palmolive. In this role, Philip focused on enhancing Colgate’s efforts to attract and retain the best people from a diverse and broad base of global talent, and to create an inclusive work environment that furthers Colgate’s commitment to Becoming the Best Place to Work.

Philip joined Colgate in 1990 as Associate Director of Human Resources in the U.S. Company. He has subsequently held senior Human Resources positions serving the Central Europe/Russia, Africa/Middle East, Latin America and European Divisions. In each of these areas Philip has made outstanding contributions in focusing the Human Resources function on key business issues, particularly goal alignment, training, plant site rationalization, and acquisition integration. In 2001, Philip became Vice President, Global Employee Relations - Best Place to Work. and was elected a Corporate Officer in 2003.

Prior to joining Colgate, Philip acquired broad Human Resources expertise at Procter & Gamble, where he worked for eight years in labor relations, organizational development and compensation. He also worked at Digital Equipment as Personnel Director and the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority as VP, Human Resources.

Philip holds an AA degree from Borough of Manhattan Community College, BA degree from Queens College in New York, a Master’s in Science from Columbia University School of Social Work, and an MBA from Xavier University. He is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees for City University of New York, appointed by the Governor, which has responsibility for the 23 colleges within the New York City area and is Acting Chairman of the CUNY Construction Fund. Further, Philip was appointed to the Business Leadership Council of CUNY (City University of New York), and is on the Panel for Education Policy appointed by the Mayor of New York. He is also on the Advisory Board of New York City Center, an arts and cultural institution. In addition, he is Co-Chair of the Corporate Diversity Council for the Asia Society.

Philip has received numerous awards, most recently the Crossing Borders awards from Feminist Press; and other awards from National Hispanic Corporate Achievers, the National Association of Asian American Professionals; the Quality of Work Life award from Work Life Matters magazine; the 100 Most Powerful Blacks in New York award from Crain Magazine, the Communicator of the Year award from Global HR News and the Governor’s award for Distinction in Community Service.

Biography of John Canning

While at Microsoft, John also expanded his proficiency and began freelancing on the creative side of media. He worked as a producer, videographer, photographer and reporter for MSN, MSNBC and Slate.

Biography of Beatrice de Salles (aka Bia)

Bia de Salles was born a citizen of the world. Although she grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she has always had a bird's eye view of her place in the world and has traveled from her earliest years while visiting her uncle who was an Ambassador in Europe and raised by her mother's noble relatives in Italy.

At 14 years old, she was sent to an International girls boarding school for languages and finishing skills in Switzerland near Geneva and became then a polyglot to make other polyglots envious: In addition to her native Portuguese, Bia is fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, French and German; has a basic knowledge of Dutch, Japanese, Hebrew and Chinese. She is a lifelong learner, and later studied Law at Mackenzie University in Sao Paulo, holds an MBA from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in partnership with Northwestern University's Kellogg. Bia also studied Marketing, International Affairs and Human Resources and just recently became an Interior Designer in the USA. She is a Multi-talented Translator & Interpreter for different clients of 500 fortune companies who is constantly studying, learning and updating herself. People are drawn by her positive energy and have always been interested and inspired by her soul and traveling adventures!

All Globonders are very well-connected by definition but Bia is so well connected it is astonishing!

Here are only a few of the memories I have about her: Ten years ago, when I had not yet launched Globond as a company, Bia introduced me to her friend "Martin" at the Harvard Club Dinner the night before a week of a Latin American event to which she was included as a VIP guest from Harvard Business School. The next day I realized that "Martin" was none other than serial entrepreneur, billionaire and philanthropist Martin Varsavsky who gave us then one of the best panels I've ever seen. One morning, Bia called me from India to tell me about her new friend, a journalist at Wall Street named Daniel with whom she insisted I set up a conference call to tell him about Globond. Daniel and I exchanged friendly emails about how lucky we were for having her as a friend and were going to meet soon, but before that he appeared on the news...he has been kidnapped and later murdered in Karachi, Pakistan. Yes, Bia's friend was none other than Daniel Pearl, the Jewish American journalist who served as the South Asia Bureau Chief of the Journal and was stationed in Bombay investigating the case of Richard Reid.

Another time, in the summer of 2001 she called me from Hong Kong to give me the good news that she has been finally sponsored by Morgan Stanley and was relocating to NY. She promised me that the following month she was going to fly to Boston and spend a weekend with us in Gloucester. Bia officially started working in The World Trade Center on September, 10, 2001... next day, all her friends kept writing to me from different continents asking about her. I then realized she was a true citizen of the world who has certainly always inspired many people in the cause of decency and cultural understanding! At that tragic moment I found her offering her support to others in a moment where she has lost not only her job, apartment and all belongings, but also the most precious thing she had finally conquered: Her American Dream!...

Still Bia didn't give up and I picked her up from Logan Airport 3 weeks later and dropped her at an The Langham Hotel for an interview with the board of a Private Equity Team that was meeting in Boston. 14 days later she started working as an Investors Relations Manager for a Boutique Private Investment Bank in Los Angeles and eventually got her sponsorship and her green-card. Recently, while living in California and raising her family, she was also the Marketing Officer at Desert Commercial Bank in Palm Desert and promoted events for EventNet in Palm Springs area. Bia not only is a proud mother of Lorenzo, 6 and Anna Liz, 3 and married to Ata, a handsome Turkish & Graphic-Designer from Istanbul; but she also gets along with everyone, is big-hearted, and a highly motivated communicator. In the earliest stages of Globond, I visited Brazil and met Bia for the first time. She insisted that I stay at her beautiful penthouse, had her driver chauffer me around, her servants (who adored her) cook for me, took me to have lunch at a her sweet grandmother's impressive manor in Morumbi, brought in her stylist to do my hair and make-up and literally gave me the clothes out of her closet to wear. It is not an understatement that Bia helped me portray the luxury of Globond at a time when it was more concept than reality. And she gave these gifts unconditionally as a show of support without expecting anything in return! People like that are rare and a real treasure. And Bia, who was born privileged, gave up all her possessions in Brazil and came here alone to make it by herself. In spite of her family background, (she is the great-grand-daughter of a previous Brazilian President - Campos Salles and was born when both grandparents were Senators, being one considered one of the top 10 Brazil ever had by the "Who's Who Book); Bia has always been extremely humble and determined to make her own way, relying only on her own talents in languages, her knack for communication, networking; and her good taste.

She sits on the board of many different organizations, has received different awards and has been an Ambassador to several local Chambers of Commerce. She has also been involved with the World Economic Forum in DC, India, China and Davos, Switzerland. Got involved with the David Rockefeller Center for Studies at Harvard Business School, while inviting companies to attend their various Summits, for which she also served as a panel mediator.

She has volunteered at many different organizations and done many humanitarian work for underpriviledged women & children and empowered young girls.

She even spent 3 months experiencing life at an Ashram in India and lived in Southeast Asia. Bia is currently part of the Women Leaders Forum in the Coachella Valley and serves on the Board of the Center of Leadership and Partnership Studies with Dr. Riane Eisler, PHD.

When asked who her main role-model in life was, she didn't hesitate and proudly answered that she only is who she is thanks to her dad who is a brilliant attorney in Sao Paulo who has always been her best friend! She said also she has much gratitude for her grandparents, who continually believed in her success and invested in her career and education! With all this life experience and charisma, but not yet being 40, Bia will be going to have to slow down in order for us to catch-up with her memoirs. I am sure that Lorenzo and Anna Liz will make sure to contribute to that! ;-)

Susanne has taught graduate course work in “Interactive Product Design and Development” at The Academy of Art University in San Francisco and, as a Fellow at Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership, a class in “Leadership for Social Entrepreneurs”. She is a founding partner in Social Venture Partners - Bay Area, where she led the effort to start an after-school program for low-income families in San Francisco, and founded Social Enterprise in Action, a social enterprise advocacy group at Harvard. She serves on the Boston Board for Peace Games, a Boston-based non-profit that teaches tolerance and peace in public schools around the country, and on the Advisory Board for WorldBlu Inc, a company that promotes organization democracy and freedom-centered leadership in companies.

Globond prides ourselves on having Serendipity, Synergy and Synchronicity as the 3 main drivers for our business. Today we found another validation of that model when we went for our daily reading on www.slate.com and found the following article by Daniel Gross: "Davos Man, Confused... Why the world's economic leaders blame the catastrophe on the system instead of on themselves." The entire article is a must-read for Globonders (http://www.slate.com/id/2210081/). Gross discusses this year's World Economic Forum, where the world's "great men and women" traditionally gather once a year to discuss and solve the world's biggest problems. Gross says that this year the elephant in the room is the global meltdown and simultaneous failure of so many systems and sectors. Somehow, though, he comments, the WEF attendees, used to "imposing themselves on history" are not wanting to discuss their role in the crisis. He says, "Success is the work of Great Men and Great Women, while failure can be pinned on the system."

The serendipity is that we had just picked Slate.com as our choice of media partner for the Tectonic Leadership Summit to be held for the first time in DC this April. The synergy is that Gross wrote this article without even knowing anything (yet) about what Globond is working on: The issue we have been discussing is the dysfunctional pattern in which we routinely hold up individual leaders as superstars and/or monsters, lionized one day as the solution to the world's problems, and demonized the next when things don't work out as planned. We then replace them with the next super leader. The root issue is far deeper than one of accountability.

Furthermore, leaders need to understand that they do not have to shoulder all of the responsibility themselves, and that they too can sometimes be followers, learners, listeners. In fact, yesterday I listened to a presentation at the Boston CEO Club given by Alan Gregerman, CEO of Ventureworks and a successful author. He told us that rubber boots were first invented by the Mayans 900 years before an American inventor figured it out and commercialized them. Likewise, Indians in the Brazilian Amazon were swimming the freestyle stroke thousands of years before the Europeans "caught on" and learned it....before that, they only knew how to do the breast stroke. Gregerman's point is that the solutions were there all along but were overlooked by the so-called powerful.

In fact, the solutions to many of our current problems are all around us but our leaders, for the most part, are not looking or listening. They are too busy trying to figure it out for themselves. And getting sick in the process. Oprah Winfrey, God's gift to so many people, for example, is out of shape and depressed because there is no "Oprah" for her: the people who solve her problems are paid by her to do so. Oprah should have a shoulder to cry on and be able to just be a real person, but we put her on this pedestal too high for her to jump down.

Going back to the serendipity, last week I happened upon Slate.com's Change-o-meter after someone connected to me on LinkedIn and asked us what we thought of it. Change-0-Meter turned out to be the daily score that Slate's Chris Williams and others give to the Obama Administration for how much change they are actually doing rather than discussing. I had stopped reading Slate but now realized that Slate is not drinking the Kool-Aid and is the most objective, savvy, sage voice out there right now. They are keeping it real and keeping it honest. And it dawned on me that Slate and its sister companies Washington Post and Newsweek would be the perfect media partners for our summit.. Today Daniel Gross's article articulates what it is Globond wants to accomplish in those three days, and then on a regular basis.

The Tectonic Leadership Summit will be the place where people used to having answers will go to ask the questions. Rather than getting paid huge sums to speak, they will be the paying attendees. The answers to the big questions will be provided by Globonders, people from all over the world and every walk of life, who have been working on these problems and questions for decades. One is a Brazilian Amazonian Chief; another is a Kenyan Masaai Warrior; a third is a tennis coach and author in LA who taught tennis to Oprah Winfrey. Still another is a Lebanese woman born in Senegal who was a pioneer in telecom and is now one of the world's foremost authorities on fiber optics but who is also into Physics and Philosophy and especially paradox. And we have others from a variety of cultures and backgrounds but each one is a different piece of the puzzle we have decided to call Tectonic Leadership. Tectonic Leadership means Benevolent Intent (Etsko Schuitema), Stepping Into the Crack (Samia Bahsoun), "eating the Zebra alive" (Yusuf Ole Petenya) and using the "precision principle" (Al Secunda). It is "The Me I Couldn't See"TM (Elyce Monet)And many other ideas woven together into a methodology and set of strategies that will allow these great men and women attendees to go back out into the world as an army of Tectonic Leaders to fight the good fight and have a normal life at the same time. Alongside President Obama who is in fact a Tectonic Leader already. Most of all, however, Tectonic Leadership means getting out of the trap we are all in which divides the speakers from the listeners, the learners from the teachers.

Many of us are still basking in the glow of the recent Presidential election, while also now trying to step back now, and to be"objective" to see whether or not President Obama can back up his words with actions. We are all giving President Obama "the benefit of the doubt" but now want to see if he can actually perform the miracles we need for him to achieve in order to save us all from the disaster which looms over us. What is wrong with this picture?

The answer is that the picture is distorted and we are setting up our new President to fail, unless we all make fundamental and profound changes in the way we think and act. The reality, as explained by South African thinker, philosopher and management consultant Etsko Schuitema, is that "what we are looking at now is the result of a turn we took 10 millenia ago, when we moved away from hunter-gatherer societies, which are fundamentally co-operative in nature to one of agriculture and with it the capacity to produce surplus. He says, “As a species we have pursued increasingly complex strategies for the pursuit of self interest since we started cultivating crops and producing surpluses that the select could control. It is as if the anthem of homo sapiens over the last 9000 years has been one of an increasingly complex and entrenched song called ‘I am here to get’. This fundamental intent rule has delivered us, as a species, to a place of globally catastrophic proportions; those who control the surplus control other people and the world, and as Etsko explains, "the burgeoning of greed and unbridled self-interest has produced a world on the brink of complete failure."

Etsko is not just theorizing or hypothesizing but has studied the issues of Leadership and Intent for more than 25 years, in a wide variety of cultures and sectors, as part of a larger quest to find out what causes the kind of commitment and unconditional loyalty necessary to create a profitable company, a winning team, a thriving country. He became astonished and then over time, convinced of his findings when he got the same answers to the questions he was posing no matter where or in what context he was doing the research. In fact it turned out that there was no company, no country, no team that could command the kind of loyalty needed to get a surplus or a winning score. Surplus or profit by definition means that the workers or team members are giving more than they receive. But paradoxically, Etsko found, people are not loyal to institutions; instead people commit to other people, more specifically, to those who lead them but with a Benevolent Intent, meaning that the leader is concerned with their well-being and development. Etsko refers to this as The Care and Growth model of Leadership.

It does not take a rocket scientist to look at our situation here in the United States to see then why our banks are broken and our entire system is bankrupt. John Thain, the former head of Merrill Lynch, spent over $1.2 million to decorate his office, and yesterday he tried to excuse himself by saying that the renovations were done "more than a year ago, in a different economic environment." Thain's complete lack of introspection should not be too much of a surprise, but if we don't change this way of thinking we are in fact doomed. What kind of a leader spends his resources in such a selfish way and how can he then ask those he leads to make the sacrifices necessary in any organization to create a profit? The economic environment in which Thain thrived last year was directly responsible for the mess he and the rest of us find ourselves now.

John Thain also made outrageous statements yesterday to defend the infamous $4 billion in bonuses that were paid out to Merrill Lynch employees right after they had lost $15 billion in 3 months and were going to the Government for a bailout. He said "if you don't pay your best people, you will destroy your franchise. Those best people can get jobs other places, they will leave. “One can argue that Thain's definition of "best people" is way off, given the fact that these are the same people who drove their bank to ruin. One could also point out that right now, jobs are hard to come by in any sector even for the so-called “best”, making those bonuses excessive at this time. But in fact, there is a deeper truth that we need to hear and to understand if we are to get out of this hole and not ever fall back in.
The truth, as discovered by Etsko, is that "whether or not you pay your workers the top rate for an industry or the bottom rate is immaterial and will have no bearing on the extent to which they trust you." Yes, loyalty is driven by things other than money and this makes sense if one just stops to think about it: Once you get paid a huge bonus from a bank for work already done, what is to keep you from moving to the bank that promises you a higher bonus the next year? Especially when the culture you are in encourages self-interest and greed. Only one example illustrates the veracity of Etsko's finding: Google is a company often cited as a best place to work and they are famous for having pay below industry standards.

President Obama is in fact the kind of leader which can command the commitment and loyalty of his followers to give more than they receive and do the work necessary to solve these huge problems we are facing. However, that means we need to listen to him, to follow his lead, and to make the hard choices,putting the greater good ahead of our individual interests. Paradoxically, this is the only thing that will save each of us from the abyss. Instead of chanting “yes we can!” it is time to answer the question “Yes, we can what?”

At the Nantucket Conference in April, 2005 British Petroleum CIO John Cross said that he would not pay for information anymore because it is a commodity but that he will pay for access to the right people. Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that Google wants to create a search tool that tells us what we should be looking for. The Killer Application which includes both ideas is Globond.

The current popularity of social and business networks in a bewildering world of virtual and real-life meetings is well-attested. Gap in the Market: Adverse Selection

The majority of networking companies and services suffer from the problem of “adverse selection”, the phenomena first noted by Nobel Laureate George Akerlof in 1970: In a market where buyers cannot accurately gauge the quality of the product that they are buying, it is likely that the marketplace will contain generally poor quality products.

The popular social and business online networks (LinkedIn, Ryze, Friendster, Orkut, Ecademy, etc.,) are inundated with people looking to find “good” contacts, which are those seen as having more connections and resources than others. These people are “takers” as opposed to “givers”, and are using the network to get something they need or want. This constant bombardment of cries for help causes the most sought-after contacts to pull away and discontinue their interest in the network, if they even join in the first place. For that reason, the most successful and famous people often do not appear in LinkedIn, etc. or if they do, it is with a minimal profile and little activity. The quality of the network therefore continues to go down.

Because Globond has a strict membership process, we solve this “adverse selection” problem by ensuring that members are of a certain quality and with complementary interests. These members will exchange benefits with one another on a mutually beneficial win-win basis at each interaction. They therefore remain involved and interested in Globond events and introductions. Hello Globonders!!!!!!!!!

I hope that you all had as relaxing, enjoyable and productive (yes it is possible to work and play at the same time!) a holiday as I did. Mine was spent in warm and sunny Florida where Chris' parents and my dad and his wife live, within a 2 1/2 hour drive of one another. In between games of pinochle, family gatherings and longer sleeps than usual, I took the time to reflect on 2008 and plan for 2009. Each of you will be getting an email in your box today with a list of things that you can do in order to get the most out of your membership and enable Globond to leverage you and your talents, experience and contacts to their maximum potential. Please take time to open and read that email and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise I am going to expect you to just "get it done"!

6. Always tell the Globonders what we really think and what we believe you need to hear as opposed to what you want to hear

7. Maintain privacy and trust with our members, giving you a place where you feel safe to be yourselves.

8. Engage in the world around us, participating and impacting the global transformation taking place in a measurable and meaningful way.

9. Count our blessings and treasure every moment of every day.

10. Go to the gym 6 days a week (ok this one is personal and my own resolution but if Barack Obama can fit it in, so can I and making it public here will ensure my follow-through)

1. James Peck's algorithm will be proven to work and will start to revolutionize transportation in various sectors

3. Leong Ying will get media attention and start to have successful debate events over his Proof of God (Universal Laws of Thermodynamics)

4. Jacqueline Wales' latest book "The Fearless Factor: Thriving Beyond the Jungles of Life" will be a best-seller, as will Al Secunda's next book (do not know the title yet)

5. Julie Dennis will sing the soundtrack for a motion picture, possibly for a James Bond movie!

6. Ravi Srinivasan's new company ProCompare will get the funding it needs

7. Dr. Dan will get a new major professional athlete as a client and be able to talk about it :-)

8. Yusuf Ole Petenya's Maasai women will make sandals and bags that will be worn by Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama.

9. Marjorie Rothstein will get Boomer Babes launched to great fanfare

10.Tashka Yawanawa will get his fashion line relaunched with the endorsement of a major fashion celebrity.

11. Philip Berry will end 2009 with his brand-new company on the verge of profitability and with a nice portfolio of blue-chip clients

12. Samia Bahsoun and her Tectonic Leadership will start to become a household name and be recognized by thought leaders and in the media. She will finish a book.

13. Tung Bui will get his break as a martial arts actor in a major film, though the part may be a small one to start

14. Dahn World will enter Brazil officially and with lots of media and other attention!

17. The dysfunctions in our world systems of finance and government will complete their process of total collapse. Out of the ruins we will help to create a new world order and a strong foundation laid for the new systems which will take place of the old.

19. Continue our work with Etsko Schuitema to mature and develop our Benevolent Intent and the Care and Growth Model of Leadership. This means to give everyone and everything their due and to get in order to give.
